miracle grow moisture control potting soil
it's peat moss, coir, verm, compost and perlite... seems to work pretty damn good too.

peat, potting soil and lime work...so does straight potting soil IME. Casing isnt necessary but it does help with retaining moisture.

monstermitch, are you trying to become fastfred? I assumed he wanted one without vermiculite because he can't find verm or doesn't have it on hand. Next time I'll be more critical and edgy with my reponses to please you.
and yes, the compost and the coir have nutrients in them, even though that's not optimal for a casing layer, it works, and the miracle grow moisture control works pretty damn good. Also, from what I can tell, it's mainly peat moss anyways, with small amounts of coir and compost. Don't believe me? ask creamcorn. (I'm doing an experiment right now using the moisture control miracle grow in PF style jars instead of vermiculite, and it's actually colonizing fairly quickly...)
Just don't try to use 100% coir for a casing layer... that's just 100% scrumptious.

I was at a commercial agaricus farm recently, and they had a whole truckload of Sunshine mix #3. They use it right out of the package for casing, without pasteurizing or anything. They say it's pasteurized at the factory. I've never tried it yet, but it's what they use, so I'm just passing the information along. RR

yep. i use it and it. there's actually no verm in it if you look at the ingredients. its 60% peat, and the remaining 40% is a mixture of coir, forest compost, and perlite (ah perlite, not vermiculite..) its treated with a wetting agent (which i believe is like jet dry) which helps it hold even more moisture, longer. it does have a small amount of fertilizer in it too, but a very, very, very small amount. ive used it on several small casings now with fabulous results, many of them running into 3rd and 4th flushes - without contams, so for your contam worries because theres nutes in it... doesnt seem to be an issue. use it straight from the bag, dont need to buffer it if you dont want (but its good practice if you do want), and i nuke it in the microwave to prep it.
make sure its this stuff:

it was used on this:
->
and this

and its won me over, and is in a large monotub and some larger bulk trays at the moment which im sure will also turn into nice looking mycoporn for you shortly.
