Too much water in BRF Jars?
    #5912633 - 07/29/06 05:20 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I was wondering if it is normal to have a tiny excess in water for the brf jars during inoculation. One of the guides suggested while making the mix you should have some excess water. Now, my question is if there is a tiny bit of a puddle in the BRF jar right before sterilization and inoculation will this drown the spores and mess up mycelium growth? Thanks for all your input.

yes.

there should never be a puddle in your jars.

you read the tek wrong.
you probably read something like this:

when you hydrate the vermiculite, leave a small puddle in the
bottom of the bowl.
add the homemade brf to the hydrated vermiculite and mix well.
that small puddle left is just the extra needed to get the mix to proper consistency.

so the puddle is for the verm, prior to adding the brf.
NOT inside the completed jar.

in fact:
it is a common practice to have a thin layer of dry vermiculite on the
bottom of the jar as well as the layer on top for a filter.
the layer on the bottom will prevent any pooling and collecting of excess moisture.

The PF tek for simple minds mention that when you tilt the bowl sideways a small amount of water should come from it. When they said small amount, they mean just that. Mine had a little more than a small amount coming from it so I put it in a strainer. I'd reccomend the same. I'm a first time grower and don't have much experience but the strainer seemed to get the perfect water content for the substrate.
