Possible subbalteatus?
#5911896 - 07/29/06 12:20 PM (17 years, 6 months ago) |

Habitat - well fertilized lawn Gills - Dark brown in older specimen, light brown in younger ones Stem - Tan and hallow Cap - Dark brown at tip, encircled by rings of cinnamon, light tan, and spotted black at the tip Spore print color - Black Location - Michigan
I have a feeling these are Panaeolus foenisecii just because they are all over the place....
Thanks for the help

The print of foenisecii can be misleading as it is very dark brown and can appear blackish under certain light. You should check it again carefully to verify if it dark brown or jet black.
Welcome to the shroomery.

They look like Paneaolina foenisecii, but there may be a mix of the two species in a well fertilized lawn. Get a spore print of every specimen, and keep the black printed ones. Don't confuse a dark brown print for being black.

Thanks for the response -
The spore print looks like charcoal to me... but, seeings how I don't want to spend the night on the toilet, I think I'll chuck them.

i say they could go either way.
the following are pics of CONFIMED active panaeolus mushrooms picked from my own manure-straw compost fertilized lawn.
there were ocasionally p. foenisecci among the pick, all were printed and came out brown, and were removed.
oh the parties :P

Is haymaker an official nickname for Pan subbs? If not, it should be - great name Helligboomerz

"hay makers mushroom", "hay mowers mushroom", "lawn mowers mushroom" are some common names for foenisecii. I've seen them in my books.. as well as many more.

In that case I move that we start calling subbs haymakers. They grow in hay more often than foes, and they can pack a punch if enough are eaten, aka a haymaker.

It would make more sense to call subbs haymakers since they grow in hay
Try googling "haymakers mushroom", it shows results for foens.

Yeah the "common name" for Pan. foenisecii is "Haymaker's Mushroom".
I think Pan. subbalteatus' is just "Subbs".

Well, since we talk more about Pan subbs and Pan foens than just about anyone in the world, if we decide to change the common name then I bet in a few years subbs can be haymakers. And lawnmowers mushroom is so much more apt for foens anyway!

Most of em look like the foes I've been finding here in michigan. The one to the left looks a little darker underneath. Just out of curiosity what county are you in. I'm in shiawasee (no I am not asking for a specific location or posting one!!!) .

foenisecii is latin for "hay maker" subbaltaetus is latin for "less than (but implicitly almost) beltlike"
hence pan subbs common name "girdled panaeolus"
panaeolus of course means "all varigated"
another name for pan sub is Panaeolus venenosus "poisonous panaeolus"

The gills look to be differn't (darker one one) that I can see which would make it more likely to drop a darker print. I would guess a mixed collection of subbs and foes or maybe just foes. Pm mjshroomer he should be able to provide a valueable opion on this. Anyways foes aren't poisonus but I still wouldn't recommend eating them.
