[ID] First find ... possibly =/ - Gulf Coast ?
    #5911232 - 07/29/06 05:57 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I am having doubts that what I found are P. Cubensis Gulf Coast Strain, or just active period. I am almost certain that they are, but it would really suck to be wrong wouldn't it ?

Well... they're obviously not very fresh, they've been out there for a few days, we've gotten more rain since they've popped up so I will probably arrange a new hunt in the upcoming days.

Kind of a dark blue/gray color to the gills. ^

Habitat: Cow pasture, found growing in groups out of dung.

Gills: The gill color is mostly white with really dark almost grayish blue tint inbetween/throughout some of the gills.

Stem: Brown/Tan/White; The ring on the stem doesn't appear to be dark on most of them... shouldnt the spores have made these dark if they are cubes ?

Cap: Brown to white/tan, 3-6 inches in diameter.

Spore print color: One of the little caps that I almost definitely expect to be a cube is being printed now.

Bruising: No color change was observed; Is it possible for the bluing to be reduced after the age of the mushroom increases?
Location: Southern Mississippi (Gulf Coast Strain?)

Thanks ahead of time, finally located a field today

I looked up some info about Lepiota's and it could resemble them, pretty sure it probably is going to be... and that's going to bum me out.

When I put one of the caps in the freezer for a bit and took it out the gills turned dark purple / gray. Doing the spore print too. Don't think I got lucky this time =(

Any other ideas ? Sorry for the bad picture quality, my old camera got broken, this one doesn't even have a focus feature... peice of crap >.<

My first impression was Lepiota too.

From the picture it looks like the stipes (stems) bruise red.

Yes, it certainly would suck! Those are poisonous. I don't think they will kill you, but sometimes death is the lesser of two evils

Those are definitely not Psilocybe cubensis. Not a Psilocybe. I would lean toward Macrolepiota, as well. Don't eat them without a positive ID. You seem to know better, but I thought I would add that.

Haha now that I look at this picture and compare a little bit better.. why did I think these resembled Cubies ? well... probably because they totally looked like it from the road, and even when I picked em at night, they looked JUST like the top of a cube in the grass on dung. I didn't want to accept the fact they were the wrong ones =( lol...

I'm in southern miss. and it's been raining assloads all month, and I know they're everywhere, they have to be. I just can't find a field !

Looks like you got ol' green gills! (Chlorophyllum molybdites)
These mushrooms are mistaken for cubes all the time, but they are mildly poisonous; do not eat.

(P.S. why hasn't anyone else mentioned green gills? That was a very easy ID to make...)
