Wrong. That's nonesense. Coir is as nutritious as horse manure, and is not suitable for use as a casing layer due to the nutrition unless massively diluted with vermiculite. RR
That's news to me...source?? I can see coir grown shrooms matching (or slightly exceeding) potency of PF grown fruits...but there is no chance in hell coir is as nutritious as horse shite. 50/50 50/40 coir/verm casing has always done wonders for me also.

WOW thats good to hear.
I wonder if potency is less though with the following flushes.
Could coir be used in a mono tub grow?
Those massive fruits have got me wanting to do a straight coir grow for sure

i would say coir could be substituted for the poo in any shape, size and form. I would say that the monotub would work... (but monotubs and doubletubs have never worked for me.They always end up getting contamed before the first flush. IME)
I am gonna try to pasturize the coir next time... got spots of Trich forming.

Nice to hear it worked for you. Coir for me has always been a small scale thing, but never anything big. I think my next grow I will go 50/50 coir / hpoo and see how that goes.
I get some off brand coir from a local place. 3 bricks for $3.99 can't beat that.....
except hpoo = free

Perhaps since you're the one disputing the facts as presented by actual experience, YOU can provide the source. The fact of the matter is, bagged up cow manure is even more nutritious than horse manure. Mushroom growers like horse manure for its texture, not the nutrients. Grains are the most nutritious of all, but there is no evidence that simple cased rye is more potent than rye spawned into manure. The whole nute/substrate thing is poorly understood.
The bottom line is plain coir makes an excellent substrate. It can be made even better by adding manure, worm castings, coffee grinds, cotton seed hulls, straw, etc. RR

how much worm casing / coffee grinds would you suggest Roger?
Oh and Oatman. I have used Critter Country with coir with good results.

There's no rules for how much worm castings or coffee grinds to use. Any can be used as substrate, so just mix in whatever proportions you have. Be sure to check and balance ph. RR

Wow, this is pretty amazing to me. Great grow.
I'm returning to growing after a few years off, and catching up to the latest developments. The idea of using coir as a substrate rather than a casing is totally new to me. I've used coir as a casing many times, and always thought it kicked ass. I can't remember a single contam problem with it. (And I'm not a sterility-overkill grower, so if coir is nutritious, it must have some contam-restistant properties!) It never occurred to me that it had any nutritional value as a substrate. Manure is tough to come by in my area (in manageable amounts anyway) so it's pretty sweet if this really makes a good replacement.
I have spores on the way for my triumphant return to cultivation. Pan cyan and some South American cubensis. Think the cyans will work on coir? I guess I'll give it a try.

I pasturized the coir for 1 hr. this time... will dunk the casings for 24 hrs after the first flush also.

There are some reports that the potency drops off dramatically after the first few flushes.
Oatman: Are you adding anything to the Coir this time?
