    #5909307 - 07/28/06 03:31 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

i was mowing my mom's lawn when i found alot of these mushrooms on the
ground i was about to throw them away when a friend told me that he saw
my mother put alot of fertilizer on the grass throughout the month
and suggested this website because they could be valueable. If you can
identify please tell me.
Found: fertile lawn.

gills: adnexed white can't find spores (newbie)

stem: average 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches long off white brown ,average 5-10
cm in diameter, solid and thin, fatter at base.

cap: 1-2 inches in diameter, brown to dark brown in color velvety when
first picked later a bit sticky, umbonate , sort of closed concave.
spore print: yellow

some of the shrooms twisted a bit when drying. here is a before and after drying pics. the bottom with coin is dry. when i picked them they had white/gray dots on them too

I see that you named one of the pics "hopingforatrip.jpg"...

They aren't anything that is going to make you trip.
I wouldn't rule out the possibility of them being poisonous either.

possibly a Hygrocybe punicea. I'm not sure though. Just don't eat 'em unless someone with 5000000 posts or more tells you to.

Does anyone have 5 million posts?!  And if they do, they're probably from the OTD or The Pub.
Maybe a bit of an over statement?  Maaaybe, hmm??
Ehehehe, I would not eat anything just because someone with 5 million posts (and FAR too much time on their hands) told me to... I have to be positive for myself of the ID, and if others back me up, then and only then will I consider eating any mushroom.

Sorry about that CureCat, I had no idea anyone would actually read that and say to himself, "I think he's being literal about that 5000000 post comment."

I'll try to be more precise from now on, thanks for the checkup.

A yellow spore print could be a light deposit of brown spores. How long did you leave the mushroom on the paper to make your spore print? Try doing one overnight so you can get a good heavy deposit of spore powder.

The very fibrous looking caps suggest Inocybe to me. Inocybe is not a genus you want to eat. It has perhaps the highest percentage of poisonous mushrooms of any genus. Most of them have high levels of muscarine. About the only good thing you can say about muscarine poisoning is that deaths are rare.

Happy mushrooming!

From Toxicman: "About the only good thing you can say about muscarine poisoning is that deaths are rare."

Indeed, keep in mind that muscarine has the same mechanism of action as chemical weapons like sarin gas which was used in the Tokyo subways to horrific effects. Definitely not something you want to experience.

well i left it there for 12 hours. isnt it only possible to get a print off a wet shroom cap. i would just figure you cant do it with dry mushrooms.
