My Color Changing Morning Glories (WTF?)

Alright all you botanists out there, check this out. A few months ago my girlfriend's parents (C and L) gave me a little pot of morning glory babies from thier yard. These purple beauties had been growing on thier property for the last 20 years or so; big beautiful PURPLE flowers year after year.
My girlfriend's parents were unable to tell me which type of morning glories they actually were, but they were old hippies and they figured that since i was into odd types of plants, they would give me this little pot of starts for my birthday.
The babies got a little neglected since i was unsure about their species. In the meantime, I had started my own Heavenly Blues from seed and they were the apple of my eye. The starts that I received from C and L waited patiently in the pot while the Heavenly Blue seeds grew up big enough to transplant.
These babies grew nice and thick. They were unable to do anything with the feelers (vine portion of the plant) that grew because there was nothing for them to grab. The stocks got nice and thick to say the least. Finally I transplanted these guys into the ground and gave them some chicken wire to climb on.
FAST FORWARD TWO MONTHS
The stocks on these guys are soooooo thick. It is amazing! However, the vine has not flowered yet. (My heavenly blues have however, but are not setting seed) POINT OF THE STORY......
I have little yellow flowers coming off the tops of the stock. They are not on the vine portion of the plant, as they are with the HBlues. These little yellow flowers bloom at night and are the classic morning glory shaped flower. Now what the hell is going on?
This plant has sprouted purple flowers for atleast 20 years, seriously! Flowere come off the vine, year after year. But, after moving some of these guys to my house, they grow yellow little guys out of the stock, not the vine?
Can anyone explain this plant morph to me? I am baffled.....

Are they MALE flowers? I am sure that they are morning glories and did not get mixed up with another plant from my garden. I will try to post pics of these weird things....
