50-plus pounds of pot seized in Bloomingburg NY

This was a bust near me..

Quote:

Bloomingburg - Cops seized more than 50 pounds of marijuana, with an estimated street value of a quarter of a million dollars, from a property yesterday on Nashopa Road.

Police say homeowner Stephen Healy, 54, along with Stephen Adamson, 48, Lorraine Salatino, 39, and Alfred Salatino, 34, were in a shed clipping pot buds off the stems and packing the smokeable buds into plastic bags when officers raided the property about 1:45 p.m.

Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff said his department got a tip about a large pot-growing operation at the property. District Attorney Steve Lungen helped police get a search warrant yesterday.

Police hauled 60 "sour diesel" pot plants, each about 4½ feet tall, out of a shed outfitted with eight 5,000-watt grow lights. Healy had apparently bypassed his electric meters in order to pilfer his power, police said.

In the shed where they arrested the suspects, police found dozens of "Himalayan haze" pot plants hanging to dry, about 12 pounds of dried pot in plastic bags and trash bags full of discarded stems.

"For a home-grown, inside operation, this is a big one," Schiff said. "This is pretty sophisticated."

The Himalayan haze sold for $4,000 per pound and the sour diesel, apparently more potent, sold for $4,300 per pound.

Police said Healy wasn't saying much last night, other than that he had a guy that he sold his product to.

Healy's home is a small bungalow set back from Nashopa Road on about four thickly wooded acres. There's only one nearby house, and it's screened from Healy's by trees and brush.

Police say Healy used one shed on his property for drying and packaging and one for growing. Another appears to have been used to store supplies for the operation.

Police were still processing the suspects last night, and hadn't yet said what charges will be filed. Possession of more than 10 pounds of pot is the criterion for first-degree criminal possession of marijuana. Illegally growing pot is a misdemeanor under state public health laws.

Good observation let this be a lesson to everyone. dont tell or show anybody what your up to, only people that youve known your whole life and know that they can keep their mouths shut, even then only select one absoloutly trusted person, to help, the more the leakier. This selected person must have absoloute and complete understanding that what they are doing can not ever be talked about, no matter how exciting it is. Secrets are secrets, and by keeping them you will be doing this every year for the rest of your life. you start talking your going to be paying fines, and a B/S debt to the pigs, not to mention all the pain and suffering the familys will endure.

Why do people who grow continually steal power. Not only is it just completely wrong, but it will surely get you caught and give cannabis users a bad name... STOP STEALING FUCkING ELECTRICTY.

I wonder who gave them the tip... If it is true that they were stealing elctricity, that may have been it. If they weren't maybe it was still the electric company? Why don't they wise up and invest in solar panels set up to look like they are to heat the house - but instead have them wired to the sheds? I know that wouldn't be a complete solution, but it would help. Plus use some generators... may be pricey these days to run off of gas, but still it's better than being nabbed for something stupid like a high electricity bill or even dumber... STEALING electricity. DOH! Bytheway... aren't the pot laws pretty lenient in NY compared to the rest of the US?

Could have been anyone calling in a tip if they smelled it. Smelly problems are to blame a lot of times for busts. Also, light/water leaks.

Stealing electricity is much smarter than trying to run 15,000watts or whatever on your meter. I have only seen 2 larger than 200 plant indoor grows and both were stealing electricity.

Well, in my opinion US pot laws are wrong. Therefore is it is our duty as citizens to not only break the law in that regard but to also speak out and step up against the government to have the law abolished. But if your going to steal from the electric company too, well then you're just a common criminal and you're contributing to the negative stigmas associated with the pot industry and pot users in general. It's really counter productive and will only server top hinder the cause.

At the point when they are collecting all the "contraband" and shit, yeah, it appears that they are overdressed.  But if I were kicking down the front door of a known drug house without knowing who is inside and how armed they could be, I'd be ready for battle too.

Ya never know; could be gentle stoner old hippy-type folks or rabid coked up nutjobs with angry pitbulls and automatic weapons.

Since your already a criminal for growing 200 plants and might see Federal time anyways you might as well steal the electricity to make life easier. I have heard that the power company mainly checks for industrial/commercial places stealing electricity more so than residental and I have never heard of someone getting busted due the fact they were stealing power it is usually determined after the fact.

76 - I see your side of the argument as well.

I'm pretty sure "the cave" in Tennessee was discovered for stealing electricity. Though, that was a MUCH larger operation. Another point I would like to add is that if you are already doing something illegal, quite profitably, and you can afford the alternative means of electricity -then it seems stupid to jeopardize the op by doing more illegal things than necessary. And that's just on a level of reducing the odds you'll get nabbed. That's beside the moral argument I am making. I just think it's wrong on MANY levels. Sorry for going on... but I feel very strongly about repealing the stupid laws we have in this country. And I hate to see things cloud the issue like: Pot growers are energy stealers and contributing to climbing prices of electricity. And although that is not absolutely the truth, there is enough evidence to make that case blown out of proportion in the eyes of the public (by the lovely media of course). Thus, helping to ruin any chance of decriminaliztion. There is a lot of support these days promoting the benefits and beneficial properties of Marijuana. I would hate to see such a petty thing like thieving be it's downfall.

Dude, dude, dude. You are not going to beat the prohibitionists through reason and common-sense. They will be forced to relinquish their illogical position by their peers one day. As rational legislators begin to put it all together the laws will be repealed.

Stealing power is simply a reaction of nescessity, to MJ being outlawed for those who wish to grow a big garden. Unless you wanna run a few generators and take an even bigger risk from the added noise and the need to expell the exhaust to the outdoors.

Stealing power is just another symptom of the drug war, just like all of the increased violence. It's all due to making something illegal that they have no possible way of eradicating.

Do people steal power to run breweries? No, that's because a brewery doesn't have to worry about its power use because alcohol is legal.

People are still going to have large grows, and power is going to continue to be stolen every day until the absurd laws are changed.

LOL, good 1

Them's not growlights tho. I think the highest HID wattage is 1,500w, and the lamps last under half as long as the 1,000w, so they arent common, or even made anymore.

Microcosmatrix, U make a good point. Tho, I still can't agree with you. We still can't justify the thieving. Generators could be placed in underground compartments to muffel the noise and could be subsidized by solar panels if they are doing an outdoor shed type thing.

I'd classify it as comandeering resources in time of war.

I'm from the school that teaches that stealing power is too unacceptable of a risk**, but I wouldn't say it's morally wrong per se given the hostile climate we live in.

**They probably have bigger meters somewhere up the line tracking what's going out. If all of the little meters taken as a whole don't agree with the one big meter, an investigation will ensue.

I agree with you. All's fair in war. They want to call it a war and take POWs then they'll have to deal with the consequences.

I'm surprised that there aren't more booby traps set out for cops. It's OK to kill when you're at war. Everybody knows that. It's you or them, that's what makes it alright to use any means at your disposal.

It's just not smart to steal power though. It's a good way to get busted.
