hey, has anyone had any success with not sterilizing/pasteurizing casing layer, substrate, or spawn?
what do you use?

sure. You could get lucky but why bother wasting spore syringes or LC?

okay, try this:
put some mold, bacteria, and spores in a substrate. no pasteurization or sterilization.
let them go.
who do you think will win?
closest you'll come is bluelou's black kow right out of the bag idea. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4304709#Post4304709
but that is outside. I think he uses sterilized spawn anyway, not into reading up on that thread right now. inside you don't stand a chance, at least not where I live.

maybe you can get away with it with your casing layer.... RogerRabbit boasts that he does not believe in sterilizing casings, but I always nuke my casings, so I am ignorant in that respect
even more chance of contam if you dont pasteurize your substrate
if you could successfully spawn cubes on non sterizlized spawn substrate, you should quit mycology, and try LOTTO or casino, cause your are one luck MF'er

yeah, he says not to sterilize, but its always followed by the suggestion to pasteurize. its not a matter of his belief specifically, its conventional wisdom of many experienced growers. pasteurization results in a large reduction in mold spore load, but allows some bacteria to survive. the lower levels of bacteria that survive, help to keep things in check, and actually prevent it from becoming with mold contamination down the road, and some bacterial activity is actually useful for pin development. there are some species (not cubes, but some edibles and others) that will not pin at all, unless there are certain bacteria present in the casing layer. sterilizing would kill these, but they can find their way back in in the environment of your FC. to go by the book, pasteurizing and NOT sterilizing it is proper. don't misunderstand 'do not sterilize your casing' as 'don't do anything to your casing'
you can get away with using plain verm casing, out of the bag without treatment.
in fact, you CAN get away with any casing, without heat treatment, but its not optimal, and you're more or less lucky when it works.
depending on how you nuke, chances are you're getting the majority of your casing mix to paseurization temps anyway. you're pastuerizing your casing and don't even realize that that's what you're doing.
