Salvia care
    #5906086 - 07/27/06 05:05 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I'm getting a salvia plant off of craigslist and need to know the best tips to taking care of it so I don't mess it up. I will need to treat it with some sort of pesticide (I usually use tobacoo spray) because I'll be bringing it inside and it will probably have pests depending on how it was grown. I need to be sure that tobacco spray won't harm it and also need to know what kind of soil to use, what p.h., what fertilizers if any and what humidity and frequency of watering. Any help is appreciated.

Don't be fooled by people telling you salvia need lots of humidity and need to live in a bubble. They do well under high humidity... BUT... they also do real well in a normal house atmosphere. Here are some pictures of my old ones, I ended up losing all mine and im about to order some new ones very soon.

If you have any spacific questions maybe I can help you :smirk:

What kind of soil do you use. Im buying a plant tommorow and bought a heating pad and some jiffy pellets and rooting gel to make cuttings and am going to use the same soil as for m.j. if that's possible. Also during those special couple months when I have a 250 w hps lamp for 12/12 hours should I move the salvia out (the humidity will be way lower) and under some shitty compact flouros or onto my window sill. My house has spider mites and pests (I haven't seen them on my plants yet because I have a fan that keeps them from making webs). What can I do to make sure my salvia doesn't get sick? I really appreciate your help those are some nice plants you have there.

Also I really don't want to get a humidity tent. My room is small and it is already at 65% humidity. If I spray the plants a lot do I still really need a humidity tent to grow and clone?

they grow well in any soil usually, but the more expensive it is the better it is usually, I usually buy mericle grow if I can. But whatever you use for your mj would be fine im sure. As for lighting, I find that shitty compact flouros work very well when it comes to salvia. I believe hps would be too strong for salvia in my opinion anyway. I'm not too sure about the spider mites, you may have to do some research about spider mite infestations, I know there a few simply cures for such things, I just never had a problem with them.
As for humidity, its nice to have it especially for clones, but you do not need them for salvia. Once you take a cutting and put it in water the plant will go limp for awhile , but should recover in a few days and perk right back up, might see some browning of leaves though. for normal plants humidity isn't really an issue but if you can get a nice box that you can keep humid for clones that would be great, because clones would need it more then mother plants.

Thanks for the comment about my plants :smirk:

Good luck

I'm a botany student and will have access to my school's greenhouse in the coming semesters and I'm interested in getting several salvia D plants. Before I do, however, I was wondering if there are salvia strains more commmonly available that have similar growing and living conditions. I'd like to raise a less crucial plant first to make sure I can provide a good home to the active plant...

I have a decent green thumb and the green house will be under my control, but a test would be worth saving the life of one plant!

I can't remember exactly, sorry, I think they were about 40 watts each (4 foot long) but I'm not completely sure.

Thats also a real good way to do it, and you are right, the humidity would help for transition purposes.
