Jar broke while PCing, why why why?!?!?!

OK, my friend just pressure cooked some quart jars of birdseed, when they were done he took em out to shake em, one of em had broken clean in half, near the bottom about an inch up. He put a washrag in between the jars and the bottom and a piece of plastic on top of that. Why in the world dd the jar break?? He wants to make sure this doesn't happen too often as it could get expensive. Thanks!!!! Vis

well ur supposed to take em out while they're still hot and shake em to evenly distribute the wet kernels w. the dry. So how do I account for this?? Any tips? Thanks so much!!! Vis

Tough one. Did it break while he was shaking it? Here's a few guesses. If the jars were cold when they went in the cooker, it could have cracked early and then finally broke apart later. Also, was the kitchen cold? If this was the case, it might help to wait just a little longer, or wrap them in a towel so they don't cool as fast. It's also possible that he was holding it with a cloth and that bottom inch was all that was sticking out so it cooled unevenly and cracked it that way. Another scenario could be that the bottom of the jar was sitting in the hot water and the cool air rushing in cooled the top. All of this is speculation on my part so I may be way off base. But you can bet it was uneven cooling or uneven heating. Sorry you had a run of bad luck. At least it was only one jar. Which makes me wonder, Was it the first jar out, or the last jar out, or neither. Anyway, hope that helps you figure out your problem. Anyone Else? Free Spore Ring

don't know if this'll help or not, but it WAS the last jar out of the PC.

don't know if this'll help or not, but it WAS the last jar out of the PC. And no, it didn't happen while shaking, he just picked it up, and the bottom inch fell off. Pretty crazy.

Well that narrows it down, Just guessing still... The jar broke at the water line or just above it? And the kitchen was cool? If this sounds right then here's my guess: The water held the bottom of the jar hot, and the cool air caused the top of the jar to contract. Which was basically to opposing forces pushing the glass in two directions at the same time. If this is the case. Then it can be solved by putting the lid back on between jars. Again it's just a guess, but ya gotta start somewhere. Hope that helps. Free Spore Ring

Bump, Obviously, I'm no physics major so would one of you guys that are a little sharper on this matter, tell us if we're looking in the right direction. Busting jars is some serious shit.

As you said, a big temperature gradient in glass causes forces which break the glass. It happens mostly when the jars are heated too fast, so the bottom of the jar is in hot water and expands more than the upper part of the jar.
