First hunt, very successful!
    #5904404 - 07/27/06 04:50 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Went hunting for the first time tonight, and just got back in. About a 40 minute drive to the fields, then only one field that had any mushrooms so we searched it for a while, heres the yield. Only 3 I've spotted as not cubensis, the others all were pretty striking.

I'm gonna spore print them all and take individual pictures of them all when i wake up tomorrow.

Very nice especially being new to hunting. It's good to see people do their research ahead of time and know what to look for.

Congrats

Yeah, examine your find, I think I see some inactive Pans. and maybe (hopefully) an active pan or two.

Yep, if you have an active pan (Copelandia) in there, then you'll want to know.  Back before I knew all I needed to do, I mixed some copes up with some cubes, and then dosed as if they were all cubes.  It was an interstellar voyage of monstrous proportions.  :mushroom2:

Could you guys point out which one is the cope? I've spore printed 3 that I didnt instantly identify based as a cube.

The hunt was incredible all around. We prepped for several hours, planning and preparing. It ended up working perfectly, although we saw several police and the fields were kind of empty, and the lighting situation sucked. No moon, and foggy and overcast. We had to use lights,  but all we had were our cell phones because I had planned on just using night vision and this one small UV flashlight.

The feeling was great coming across the first one, all alone by himself in the middle of a field. I'm sore from all the tripping around, we spent quite a few hours in the fields and ducked down in cowshit hiding from cars. We had camo on, and didn't get spotted once.

And we are gonna go back in under a week, the fields recieved a very heavy rain several hours before we started the hunt, so we were probably jumping the gun.

We ran into a skunk twice in the best field, and the cows ran into him too. Thankfully we didn't get sprayed, but the cows did and it stunk. We scared the cows a few times, stumbling right into the herd and getting a nice earthquake of cows stampeding away for our troubles, freaking my less bovine experienced friend out quite a bit.

Thanks for the comments  .

Yeah, cows can be quite an experience at times, especially in the dark, when you're already freaked out looking for skunks and obstacles.

These are the ones I was looking at:

Not to say what they are or are not, and not by any means definitive, but, you get the idea. If you need to, do a search for pans and copes, you'll get lot's of definitive info.

I didn't really look very closely at the pic. After looking again it's too hard to tell - too blurry (the majority do look like cubes)... either way, a spore print would help separate the two (and of course lack of blue bruising would indicate something inactive - as cubes and copes bruise blue readily).
I assume you probably already know how to tell cubes apart from other things if you have experience picking them.

The biggest one on the far right is the primary one I suspected of not being a cube, and it doesnt bruise any color really. I have it spore printing right now, I'm going to get out the good digital camera and take individual pictures of each for you guys. Thanks.

Might be a good idea to put each collection in an individual bag by species in the future, so that that a bunch of the same species don't get in the same pile of mushrooms.

Yeah, that would have been a good idea, but to be honest last night I didn't see any that didn't look like cubes. Here are some pics.

Pictures are at 1024x768 when you click the thumbnail, let me know if you need higher res.

Well the first four pictures obviously look like Panaeolus (includes the 3rd one down which just displays a link and not thumbnail).. if there is no blue present on them at all they aren't active.

Not sure about this one.. was it growing along with the top ones? Why is it off to the side in a picture of its own?

Pictures 1,2 and 4 are the non-active Panaeolus antillarum.

DId you see the spore print? It was completely black. And there is not any blue on them at all. Guess they aren't active, oh well. I'm satisfied with the haul, its all now in the dehydrator.

Yes, I saw the spore print of the others, I was just wondering if that specific single one in that pic was the same as the others - as it is hard to tell... anyways, never mind.
