incubator problem
    #5902648 - 07/26/06 06:52 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

i have a large rubbermaid tub with water in it. i only had a small rubbermaid so i put it in there with minimal water.i think my mycobag(in the incubator) might have been to close to the heater and mycellium only forms on the up side and it forms in balls and grew slowly. could this be the problem? i put it on a rack so it is now farther away from the heater but the temp is 82-84 still in the small chamber with the mycibag. was this the right thing to do?

If you don't have the supplys to make a full incubator you're probably better off without one. I incubate at room temp 74-78, and it does just fine.

agreed for sure.
sooooo many people ruin their jars by setting their
incubator to like 86 degrees.
then they wonder why growth slowed and bacteria crept in.

you could have already done too much damage.

the center could have fermented.
bags produce more heat than jars.

I "incubate" (colonize) my bags on a wire rack out on the open.
I wouldn't recommend any other way.

too cold = slow growth
too hot = dead

take your pick

what temp is 82-84?

the water
the air in the inner tub
the wall of the tub

you want your substrate at the center of the jar to be around 84 or so.
if the ambient air temp is 80-82, you are looking at around
84-85 in the center of your jars.

I leave my jars out to colonize on shelves in their own little room.
the temp in there goes from 78-82 degrees.
I have fast colonization times and no temp related problems.

when using incubators, I had all kinds of trouble.

If I had an incubator, I would make sure no temperature probe
in any part of the incubator read over 82.
I would keep it around 78-82, just the the temp in my little room.

Have you taken a look at this guide yet?
http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek#a5

He says:
"The jars should be stored at 21-27°C (70-81°F), the warmer the better, but not exceeding 27°C"

And sorry to take the attention away from you but I have a question myself. How can I keep the fish tanker heater down? I saw something about clamps but I couldn’t find them and the dude at the store looked stoned himself, so I was wondering if the suction cups they provide with the heater will be sufficient enough to keep it down. I tested it out and they popped off, though it was dry in there. If these wont do, would you have any other suggestions?

yes.

suction cup it to a small piece of glass.

they are dirt cheap.

the weight of the glass will hold it down.
nice and clean too, no mess or whatever.

sounds good, not to go over 27.

I agree with ^MM^.

You can push temp's to the optimal range.

Push them, or by some circumstance they go beyond that.

They tend to grow slower, stall and/or contaminate.

It is better to be SAFE, than SORRY.

A few degree's less, may mean a couple days more, in colonization times.

But, FAR LESS stalling, and/or contamination.

My spawn jar colonization temp's range from 72, to about 78F.
Sometimes, on scorching hot days, as high as 80F.

I have less than 1% stall, or contamination rate.

Even - using 3 liter jars.
This one is about 90%, in a week.
