Confusing thoughts, body and mind
    #5902249 - 07/26/06 03:48 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

This is probably more science(y) than philosophy, but they are related.

We are mammals, which is a part of the "animal kingdom." Our bodies are made up of thousands of living organisms, not classified as animals, but they are living and vital nonetheless. So basically, our bodies are shells housing thousands of organisms/creatures. Granted, these organisms have built and continue to build shelter all around them (skin, hair, etc) giving "us" a full form of a body.

The only thing I see, from my limited anatomical and biological knowledge, that is actually "us" is the mind. Now, I'm not calling the mind the brain...for this point, mind would be something closely related to ego if not it, but I'm unsure. So this mind makes decisions, makes desires, etc...not essential to bodily function.

Everything other than this mind are living, respirating (in most cases) organisms. This would mean that "we" are not our bodies, we are only our minds, our [nonessential/non-instinctual] thoughts.

This is actually too confusing to type. I'll try to organize my thoughts better and get more down here. Feel free to rip this to shreds if you have the facts to do it with, it might help me.

The body and mind are a complex, they cannot be separated. For instance, if someone were to suddenly stab you in the leg, you would experience a sharp pain, and more than likely, your mind would be consumed with the pain and thoughts about it.

Conversely, if you are very unhappy (in your mind), your body grows unhealthy, the immune system weakens, your health just goes downhill.

So the body and the mind are very closely linked.

While I agree my mind would be consumed with the pain, not everyone's would. There are people who have learned through mediation and other practices to not dwell or notice the pain. But I'm sure their brains are still firing and the usual signals are still being sent throughout the body.

the actual us can be debated,

in Buddist philosphy there is not actual self

in Christianity the self, is the soul, which is not necessarily a spirit,

to my own self awarness and my new age concept, the self is the mind, and the body, and soul is an unknown, in defining life

to some other religions like Hinduism, we're actually gods in our own right,

and some other religions liken us to be a part of the whole, in which our idendity is manifested through self-denial

but the clear distinction of self, seems to stem off of defining what god is, or the absolute truth, or philosphical POV

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Personally, there would be no mind, if the heart failed to be...which makes the heart the all essential center if anything. The computer cannot function without electricity, but then again, electricity could not function without computer assisted terminals.

I'll tell you what might help you...Think up a direction before you "decide" to post random discoveries, helps guide the conversation. You value the mind, well, sure, it needs to be valued. Wear a helmet when you go bike riding, dont sleep on rocks (Unless you wish to be visited by angels) and give yourself a thwack, Pow, slam, every so often so your defence system can strengthen the skull.

Who knows if the mind would fail or disappear if the heart failed? No living person knows, and only those who are dead know...or don't know if knowing is not possible.
