A most peculiar envelope
#5902224 - 07/26/06 03:41 PM (17 years, 6 months ago) |
|
|
I received, today in the mail, a most peculiar envelope. It was hand addressed and contained a check for 2960.00 dollars. The check was hand written as well. It contained my first, last, and middle names. Although I do not know the person whom it was sent from my first instinct was to cash it. I thought, however, I would ask your opinion. What would you do?

Wow, you have no idea who sent it!?
I'd try and deposit or cash it for sure. Especially if it had my full name on it. Seems like it wasn't a mistake that it ended up getting there.
If you don't want it you could always sign it over to me! (yes I'm a poor bastard ) Too bad I never get checks like that.

Wtach out for trick checks!! look around for small print, on the back of check, or accompanying paperwork. Sometimes, by endorsing the check, you agree to...insert scam here... Find out who sent it before signing!! Peace

Good point.. if the envelope didn't contain any other papers, and it looked like a normal check (I usually look over all of the writing on checks) then I say go for it.

I don't want a mob boss showing up at my door in 2 months telling me he sent it to the wrong person and shoot me. lol. Seriously though. I wish I had a digi cam to post a pic of it up. I have never had this happen. I think I am going to try and cash it tomorrow.

There was no accompanying paperwork or anything. The check is just the same as any hsbc check (normal size, no extra writing, water marks, ect.).
Maybe this is my lucky day.

i say cash it as thats what was clearly intended.
not to mention mob bosses are generally reasonable people if you invite them over for some tea and give them the check back

I think it's too good to be true.
I find it hard to believe someone you odn't know "mistakenly" sends you a check for that amount.
Who made out the check? I'd do some googleing, then go and ask the bank what they think.
Just to be safe, open up a new account and deposit it in there until it clears.

The person's name whom sent the money to you is printed on the check?
Why not just look into the name or whatever other info is on the check?
You can call the issueing bank to be sure the check is good.

good idea if you can find one that will cash that big of a personal check. but yeah call the issuing bank and ask them about it and ask for the persons name so you can see if you know them.

Is it possible for the writer of a check to find out the number of the bank account that their check was deposited into? Might not be such a hot idea.

It sounds like one of those "high-interest rate" checks. Basically, credit card companies and other predatory lending agencies write you a check. If the check is cashed then you have to pay it back...often at an incredibly high interest rate. Read the fine print of any scrap of paper that came with that check.

Ok with all these other posts about scams and such, Im not entirely clear on one thing: Is it a personal check, a check from a company, or a cashiers check?
Is there the name of a bank on the check?

It is a personal check with a name and address of the person writing and bank issuing. I called information and found no such person listed. I also checked the address and got a picture of his house so I know it is a correct address. I just cannot find a number for him. Name is Frank Fellini. I know there is a artist by that name but why would he send me money?

I say you drop by his house with the check and be honest about what happened. Maybe somebody was trying to fuck him out of money sending checks to random addresses? Who knows, you might even get a reward for being so honest about it.

Call the issuing bank and pose as a retailer and ask for verification of funds.. They will say yes or no... In allot of cases now this can be done with a 1-800 Number and a automated voice for retailers..
Give it a shot!

I say look up this fellini cat and call him up.
he prolly meant to send it to another person with your name.
be honest and offer to return the money as a sign of respect.
there may or may not be a reward for being honest, but regardless its the right thing to do.
besides, being $3000 in debt to a guy named Fellini seems to me like a bad position to be in.

You can have your bank call his bank and verify that the funds are available in his account. Not an absolute guarantee that the check won't bounce, though.

I'd still probably just try and cash it. Not like I have anything to lose though. Already in debt

Zerox it then cash it. If it has contact information on the check maybe you should call\write the person on it.

My sentiments exactly.
Personally I'd call one of the other 7 Fellini's in NY and see if they know how to get in contact with him about it.

Well, after reading all the other posts... The only trouble I can really see is that someone might try to say that you had agreed to sell him something, and try to collect that... Or someone had mentioned something about cashing a "fake" check...
but if you keep the envelope with a copy of the check, I'm sure they could analyze the handwriting to clarify that you were not involved...
I don't think it is likely that the bank would supply your account/routing number to someone unless the police were involved... At that point, they'd probably freeze your account anyways...
Write a letter and ask frank what's up?

There you go. Use some program to make an invoice stating that you have recieved payment for xxxx (something worthless that you will send in return) and that it will be sent in a seperate delivery. Send him the recipt and in a seperate letter send him the worthless crap. Something like an artilce on how to become a millionare with eBay. Now you have sold him something so it is ok to take his "payment".

Frankie the fish is waiting for an opportune time. He's probably going to claim his home or another piece of property after the check is cashed. If he puts up a fuss there will surely be an accident succeeding.

It's ok if he comes to my house. I can make him dissappear at the bottom of a mountain or in the head of a holler. If I don't most for a few months tho you all should probably just assume I am dead.
