nope. perlite is not absorbent, vermiculite is. They are not interchangeable. That employee didn't know what he was talking about. Any large gardening store or nursery should have it.

Not true, it's very random which ones carry it. I'm not gunna lie to you (and you've already seen one store that doesn't), it can be hard to find vermiculite as most people will tell you. There's probably a store near you that has it, you just have to look around. The two products are similar (sorta) for gardening, but that's not what you need it for. Perlite is lava rock that's been expanded, and vermiculuite is a mineral that has also been expanded. You can't use them interchangably in this hobby. Each use they serve here is never applicable to the other product. And something you need to trust me on here, employees at nurseries (not specialty shops, but like Home Depot and Lowes) never, NEVER know what anything is, you're on your own. sorry to break it to you.

you might have a bit harder time finding it at the big chain stores anymore though cause of the whole asbestos thing, which isnt really true. there was one rock mine where they got vermiculite from that had small traces of something very close to asbestos in it. that along with all the overly hyped newspaper articles and everything caused alot of places like walmart, lowes, and homedepot to stop selling it. just look in your phone book for a local gardening or hydroponics store and they should carry it

I had a rought time finding some vermiculite as well. Until I broke down and checked Ebay. You can get a pound for $4 and a small amount of shipping. As a little vermiculite goes along way, this is about your best bet.

I got my bag on Amazon.com for something like 5$ total, it's nowhere near 50 lb but it'll last me a while. I'm a complete noob at cultivation and couldn't fine it anywhere. The guy at Home Depot told me the same thing, that Perlite was interchangeable with Verm. I just told him he was full of it and left. Nobody around here carries it, even gardening stores.

that's pricey! also another place you can look is a swimming pool maintanence store or pool supply... they use it for insulation on swimming pools.
also some packing supply stores have it, it's used to ship chemicals.

Oh, and perlite and vermiculite aren't even close to being interchangeable...
perlite is for increasing DRAINAGE in your plants, which means it 'wicks' water away from wherever it is.
vermiculite is for increasing the amount of water your soil can hold.

If you go to a store, don't even try asking employees if they have it. I've had garden center managers tell me they had never heard of it, and then found it ten feet from the registers.
