I found this mushroom growing in horse manure today and i thought it looked like a Panaeolus subbalteatus. It's half dead and falling apart so i probably wont eat it anyway i was just wondering what it was.

Habitat: Horse manure with wood chips.

Gills: dark brown to black

Stem: Hollow; purplish color

Cap: Yellow brown in the center fading to dark brown on the edges

Spore print color: Black

Bruising: No color change was observed. (Except the stem turned more of a purple color)

Location: Picked in Northern West Virginia

i guess it might be a sub... also looks a bit like Psathyrella as well... the nature of its hygrophanous features don't really appear subbalteatus like to my eye, however considering the condition of the mushroom is is really difficult or impossible to tell. The stipe looks similair to what you would expect with subbalteatus...
i wouldn't advise eating it... one isn’t going to provide a sufficient dose anyway... nevertheless you should consider fixing your attention upon that spot in the future.

I'd say it's not worth it... too beat up or old looking. Would be easier to identify if you had fresher specimens.

If you found one there, it is fairly likely that when conditions are good for fruiting you will see more. Post some more pics if you get any younger ones. I think it does resemble subbalteatus I suppose as much as it can being in that condition.
