Handheld meth gun for drug detection

While the hefty yellow gun developed by CDEX Inc. may look like something from a 80s sci-fi film gone bad, it could eventually end up standard fare in a patrol car. Contrary to the title's implication the meth gun does not shoot uppers at what's in its crosshairs. The flamboyant device cracks down on crime by emitting small amounts of UV radiation onto a suspicious surface which causes most illegal substances to release a "spectral fingerprint" which the meth gun identifies. This investigative aid allows cops to detect and identify drug traces without even knowing (or suspecting) that chemical foul play was involved. The finalized version will scan for essentially any drug you can think of trying, but there's a fair amount of red tape and field testing that must be accomplished before this oversized neon pistol gets whipped out on a regular basis. Priced at around $10,000 this drug-buster isn't exactly cheap, but compared to desktopdetectors that run upwards of 50 grand, we can envision quite a few precincts placing orders for what CDEX is dealing.

They don't point it at people. Instead, it would work just like the field tests they have now, but wouldn't identify stuff like flour as cocaine the way the current tests do. It could also find residue on surfaces, such as a cd case, I would assume. It will be a long time before it is accepted in court... this is the "red tape" they are speaking towards.

I'm guessing they'd still have to have a warrant or "suspicion" to use this? They couldn't just walk up to your car and start scanning away?

Anything a cop can see through your car window is fair game. If they spot, say, a weed pipe through the window, they have probable cause to search without your consent.
I can imagine them pointing this thing in your car through the window and if it comes back positive, you're fucked.

Most car windows, at least windshields, absorb around 90% of UV light. In any case, they make UV filters that can be applied like window tinting. I wonder what the range is on the device. I wouldn't have thought it more than a few inches, but haven't given it much thought.

Imagine a future where you have to walk through the UV scanner to get into highschool. Or a sobriety test that scans your fingers, clothes, car. I had my car's interior wiped twice with a drug/bomb test pad at the border a few days ago, came back negative of course. I wonder if it was put under a desktop UV reader?

Imagine a future where we can incarcerate criminals before they even think of committing a crime; a real time saver.
Imagine a future where we get so good at incarceration for the current crimes, that we need add more crimes to the books to keep the prison-industrial complex busy.
Imagine a future where there are more people in jail, than out of jail.
Imagine a future where the techniques for surveillance and control are so subtle that most people don't even realize that they're in the system.
Imagine a future where the largest employer is the prison-industrial complex; where most of the "free" citizen's time is spent in service of the state's active hunt of the last free-individuals.
It all makes me giddy just thinking about it...

Infected Mushroom told me the cities of the future will be filled with happy people feeling good!
Seriously though, the future is now and our rights and freedoms are already gone.

I once had a cop comment about the traces of cannabis on the edge of my drivers liscence. there was at least a hit of trichomes smeared across it. I scoffed at him and he gave it back, wouldnt be the case if he had "meth gunned it". if they weed gunned my car, It would set off enough spectral activity to light up the las vegas strip.

Yeah, it's pretty scary. The "war on drugs" has largely been a war on our own citizenry. As a result of this so-called war, America's per capita incarceration rates have grown to be the largest in the world -- ahead of those of Russia, Cuba, and Iran -- and still climbing. We incarcerate our own citizens at a rate that is almost six times that of most civilized nations like Canada, France, England, etc.
Yet people with drug problems in this country who want help can't find it unless they have lots of money, or get arrested. Our solution to everything in this country seems to be to arrest people. This is a solution which clearly hasn't worked very well, since crime rates are about the same as they've always been, and incarceration rates keep going up.
100 years ago, there weren't any drug laws, or drug crimes, and most of the drug laws created in the 20th century started out, in most cases, as nothing but racist overreactions by lawmakers trying to get elected and amass political power.
They always try and equate drug use with violent crime and theft, but it is our unworkable prohibition against drugs that lead to most of these crimes, not the use of the drug itself.
Drugs are not necessarily good, but they aren't necessarily bad either. They are a mixed bag, like alcohol, smoking, fast food, automobiles, or a lot of other things. People die and hurt themselves with these things, but they can also improve the quality of a their life and bring joy and understanding with them.
Imagine a future where drugs weren't illegal; where the government kept out of people's personal and private matters; where our jails were half as full as they are now; where the police were able to focus on violent crime and theft instead of harassing kids for pot; where street gangs, criminal organizations, and narco-terrorists didn't make huge profits off of prohibition. Just imagine...
