fruit flies on casing?
    #5899363 - 07/25/06 07:40 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

i have a grow outside... well sorta.. in a shed....

So they will be more prone to bugs i guess... i saw like 3 fruit fly looking things in my casing.... i dont' think that's a good thing.... they probably wanna reproduce in his ideal setting for them.. it looks like fruit flys (really tiny bug, looking things)

I killed all that bugs that i could see... (3).... this happen to anyone? i think they like the coir/verm and substrate ... they were in a failed casing from a few months ago too....

So if this happened to anyone.. what did u do? what should i do?

thanks ladies and gents

Flies and insects carry bacteria. So when the flies landed upon your casing they probably just threw up and harvested whatever they puked on. They maybe a hazard. Next time you grow put your casing in a safier and cleaner place. Sheds tend to get dirty.

Try some of those sticky strips and/or BT (gnatrol).

You can also suck them out with a vacuum cleaner hose, which is kind of fun. It's that time of year, and ever since I showed that trick to mrs rabbit, I hear the vacuum cleaner start up in the kitchen several times an hour. They love the fruit bowls and anything else sweet. They're attracted to the smell of the mycelium, but they don't usually breed in our projects. They rarely cause much problem unless they're there by the thousands. The red pepper spray you can get at hydro shops knocks them dead too and is non toxic to us, although it might spice up your fruits if any gets on them.

If my computer screen is any indication, they're also attracted to light, so a small zapper might work, but I've never tried one for gnats yet.

Another name for fruit flies is "fungus gnats". They love warm moist environments. Neem oil kills them dead, but neem is also a strong anti fungal, so it will probably kill your myc dead as well. I think the vacuum is your best bet. But you really have to stay on them until the very last one is gone. They lay eggs under the soil, or casing, or fruit, etc. and then the larvae squirms around eating until it turns into a fly. So if flies are appearing it means there are many more larvae. Unfortunately I don't think there is a chemical that is toxic to them and not to the myc.
