yeah singles are pretty dandy, but alas none of my rides (except my bmx) are set up that way anymore. I used to have both a singlespeed mtb and fixed gear rode bike, but opted for the nexus inter8 hub on both rides. Has the look and maintainability of a single, with 8 times the speeds.

I could get to any place that I need to on foot pretty much(as far as making a living/surviving goes). There are plenty of jobs within walking distance from me, tons of stores, etc. I still end up driving most of the time though. There are better places to work and shop than the close things. If I had to, I could survive with no car, but I like them.

I drive because my job requires shuttling homeless people around to access community resources however when circumstances converge in such a manner as to eliminate the need it is back to the bicycle full time. I commend anyone who forgoes use of an automobile as the environmental and often overlooked sociological impacts are severe.

Anyone else done the same thing?

I've never owned a car, and never even got my license (well...got my beginners when I was 16, but I just let it expire without taking a road test).
I bike, walk, bus, or carpool everywhere that I need to go!
Not only do you save on car payments, insurance payments, fuel payments, ect, ect, ect....but you get some damn good exercise in the process! I definitely hold the amount of walking/biking that I do responsible for keeping me in as good of shape as I am (which isn't the greatest...but I can walk for miles no problem!).
Especially seeing as how my life is otherwise quite sedentary
