ive seen a couple different pictures where people have used plastic lids instead of the cheap metal ones that rust. could anybody gimme a link to where i ccould find some online. i know theres a couple places you can get the ball brand ones but i wasnt sure if they were autoclavable or not and from the pictures they looked a little bit thin. thanks

If you were nearby, I'd give you about a hundred for free. You have to put the filter disk on the inside of the jar with those, where they get wet with grain juice when you shake and also from condensation, leading to a higher rate of contamination. I prefer rusty lids. My autoclavable plastic ones are in a bag in the storage closet.
Are you a videographer? Was just looking at your user name. RR

I bought the last two boxes that the only 1 ace hardware out of 4 had. I recently scored some off of the internet though. Do a search for "Ball 37000".

RR

Enlighten us please.
I hate my rusty lids and would love some PP lids for my jars.
Is it just because of the filter disks that you dislike the plastic lids??? I get tired of having to buy replacements, and have decided that the 'major canning jar companies'are conspiring to keep the plastic lids out of teh reach of the general/retail public. The stores have CASES of metal lids..... but NOT ONE damn plastic lid.

yea i saw those ones at mycosupply but those are the ball brand ones and i wasnt sure about, anybody know if theyre PCable? i still dont get why you need a filter disk on them though, is it cause they dont form an airtight seal with the rim of the jar or what

Just leave the lids on loose when you PC and then tighten them when they come out. I've actually left them on pretty tight but the hole you have for gas exchange should keep them from cracking or anything. I put a self healing injection hole on one side and a quarter inch hole covered with micropore on the other. Then wrap two coffee filters over the top and rubber band in place for a dust cover.

How many Grain Jars are you planning to accomplish? Seems like alot of little camel back valve's for even 1 jar project ($$$). Is changing wet polyfill with new polyfill that difficult during the shake and mixing step?? Thats considering you even get moisture to it.
Just use a piece of fishtank tubing 2 cm above the lid and 1 cm deep. You won't get water to the polyfill stuffed in it and it wont melt I do believe. I can see this valve for LC's maybe, but I wont be the only one to tell you its really non-essential . Good Find though.
Good Luck

ha mitch wtf?
yea i know tubing would work to but i just want to try out the camelbak valves. i only plan on using one vavle per jar and the vavles cost $6 each but i think i know where i can get them for cheaper. i only need a couple jars right now too, so it would be to much of an expense for the extra convenience
and just so everybody doesnt keep telling me i know theres cheaper ways to do this and its definately not needed but its just somethin i wanna try
