If its brown put it down.. If its white its aright... Sorry I know....
Typically white on white Puffs are alright to consume.. Any Puff with a Dark to almost Black inside are not..

Are they even worth it? Do edible puffballs have a delectable quality?

Slice them thin and then brush the slices with beat up egg and then cover them in bread crumbs and fry with a little butter, so good.

If the puffball isn't white on the inside it's because its sporulating. You wouldn't want to eat a mass of spores, right?
Some people can confuse Scleroderma species with puffballs but these tend to be hard in the centre.
As you can see in the pic below the young Scleroderma on the left is white on the inside, you wouldn't want to eat these.

wtf sure those little buggers are edible, I see those all over the place! are these the ones that when you poke them with a stick they puff out a big cloud of puffy brown stuff (spores?) real soft, spongey little critters. I always thought they were some kind of truffle lol

Seems like you can't tell the difference between an earth ball and a puff ball

POISONOUS AND HALLUCINOGENIC MUSHROOMS by Michael W. Beug Email: beugm@evergreen.edu The Evergreen State College, Olympia WA

The Earth Ball, Scleroderma aerolatum, formerly known as Scleroderma lycoperdoides, can cause violent digestive upset. The very similar Scleroderma aurantium is poisonous as well. In addition, Scleroderma cepa has caused numerous serious poisonings. Deaths from Scleroderma poisonings have been reported. European mushroom books have listed Scleroderma as edible and suggest use as substitutes for truffles. Unwary mushroom hunters of puffballs who find a very young Scleroderma that is still pure white inside have suffered very prompt onset of abdominal pain, nausea, generalized tingling, spasms, vomiting and diarrhea. The edible puffballs are not only pure white inside, but are soft like a marshmallow while a Scleroderma is quite hard inside.

Yeah, oddly enough, you warned of the toxic nature of the Earth Balls, and then someone responded with a remark of just how edible they are.

The rule is white outside + white inside = edible.
All the poisonous earth balls/puff balls either have dark colored skins or dark colored spore mass. "edible" puffballs that are yellow or brown on the inside are too old to eat and should be discarded.
Only young firm white puffballs should be eaten.
ShoomieOfDoomie soaked some in meat juice and them fried them. That sounds pretty good to me.
