A newb's first attempt at a mushroom hunt.
    #5898734 - 07/25/06 04:11 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I'm not exactly looking for actives at this point, more like I'm picking some mushrooms that I find in the woods and trying to ID them so that I can get a hang of it. Sorry, no pics as of yet, I don't have access to a camera.

Also, I live in Northern Delaware, near the PA border.

Habitat: Deciduous woods, near a creek. Found growing around a dead tree (but not from it, in the ground around it)

Gills: A light-medium brown

Stem: Offwhite, hollow, larger at bottom than at top

Cap: Offwhite-light yellow, more prominent yellow in the center, fading to offwhite towards the edges, with holes in it (if that matters)

Spore print color: A dark gray.

Bruising: bruised black on the cap, none on stem

Location: northern Delaware

You pretty much need photos for ID's unfortunately - your write up is good though.

Good description, welcome the Shroomery. Try doing a search for the genus Psathyrella, they fit your description pretty well. Psathyrella's stems snap when bent.

Interesting that your location seems so close to mine.

Welcome to the shroomery by the way!

Yeah I guess I'll buy a digital camera soon, or borrow one at least.

By the way eris, I live in Newark/Hockessin area, and by the looks of your picture gallery, there must be alot of action pretty close by.

Meh, I think I'll keep on hunting for more mushrooms and hopefully find some actives...In the meantime I'm growing poppies for the opium of coures.

it's amazing how people think were all so well adapted to mycology that without visual reference we can summon out characteristics like an encycolpedic troubleshooting dictionary based on only 4 results as the variable into thousands upon thousands of gods evolutionary means of decomposing the worlds waste while thriving to give insight into the unfortunate people who dare to lend their minds to the expanding possibilities these creatures pose to burden us with.

With such confidence at 2am, we walked the 4-5 or so miles down to the beach where the african slaves lie like lions waiting on tourist prey.

no spore print could mean a few things, but my bet would be that the spores are white- or another very like color...

What you have there is not an active. A closeup (not as blurry) of the gill structure, gill color as it ages, and spore print are important as far as an ID goes. Whether or not the gills are attached to the stem is also very important.
Try taking a print on both light and dark paper next time - especially if you expect that the print will be a white or very light shade.
Usually light gills is a sign of light colored spores (though not in ALL cases).
I have a pretty good idea of what it is, but would rather not just throw out guesses until there is more info. I'm too lazy right now to save and blow the pic up in a paint program to get a better view of the gill structure. Last time I tried that with a blurry pic, it lead to nowhere really anyways.
