It will sterilize the outside of the needle, but you really should flame it.
Also for 100% isopropyl get red "heet" at any gas station.

so for example, have an upside down shotglass, pour some 'heet' in it, light that with a match and flame the needle tip til its red hot, then dip in room temperature 'heet' to cool it down?
but what about soot? has anyone had any problems using a method similar to the one just described?

there is no soot from alcohol...very clean
even if there was, the inside would be sterilized and you could just wipe the outside with alcohol swabbie. have faith!

Just get an alcohol lamp. They're dirt cheap (~$3.00) and very handy to have.

Yes. Red heet. Yellow heet is methanol, which you could probably also use, but the red heet is recommended.

I know this is 9 years old but wanted to add something to this thread (sorry if there are a million of these!) Organic cotton balls, baby food jar, and 91%iso works amazing. just kept lit for 15 min, no cotton burning at all. I used 1/2 cotton ball, unrolled and twisted. bottom of the ball (the part in the jar) was left unraveled to obtain max. absorbtion. hole was make using a small phillips, and flattened the burs with a hammer. added a second small hole(on edge of the lid, 1/8inch) to allow any neg. pressure to leave the jar for extra saftey.
