First Casing in process, need help
    #5898666 - 07/25/06 03:38 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I just recently cased 5 qts of fully colonized WBS (grown from GT lc) with 50/50 coir/verm in a monotub. I used slightly over 1/2" of 50/50 to cover a little over an inch of substrate (at first I was worried that this was too thick). There are 2 1/4" holes with polyfill on the top, and 4 additional holes right along the top of the casing layer (1 on each side). I incubated the tub, and yesterday on its fourth day I checked on it to see the progress. I'd say about 30 percent of the top was scattered white with strong looking fluffy mycelia. I did not patch (I dont know if its really all that necessary but I will next time) and today it looks like a good 60+ percent of the casing layer is colonized. Ive been giving it around 12 hours of light a day to initiate pinning, so hopefully that does the trick. Oh and the temp is kept at 74 degrees constantly.

How do I know if this is just normal healthy myc growing or overlay? I;ve read that coco coir often fully colonizes like this, but being my first casing I want to make sure.

Should I continue to fruit it, or should I cover the growth with some more 50/50 and lightly mist?

Any help greatly appreciated. (sorry no camera atm =/)

**wow had to edit, it cut off all of my post except first line when I posted....wtf???

i think you'll be fine letting it fruit, but it probably wouldnt hurt to patch at this point...just my two cents

agreed patching is a good idea at this point, you might want to patch with plain verm. 50/50 coir/verm is high in the coir, patching with more of that mix means its going to colonize straight through the patch and keep on veggin'... next time id use more verm and less coir in your mix...

anyway, you should be misting this whole time. frequently and lightly. keep the casing moist. at this stage your mycelium network is absorbing moisture from the casing in preparations for the flush. mist until you see pins, hold off til they develop some, then start up again.

between the coir, and the fact that you're using a monotub, its going to be a little tougher to initiate pins. because of all the coir its going to start looking pretty overgrown (not necessarily overlaid, don't see the growth and panic thinking you necessarily overlaid and ruined everything)... so to counteract that, give it some extra fae. fan it out after those light mistings i mentioned, a few times a day even. you can relax a little once the pins show, your polyfill holes will take it from there, but extra fae at this stage will be beneficial.
