Can't get humidity above 85% Help!
    #5898605 - 07/25/06 03:12 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I currently have 4 cakes in a 10 gallon Tupperware container with about
1&1/4" perlite lining the bottom. Perlite is decently damp(not soaked) with clean distilled water. I have a Plexiglas window on the top that is sealed with a latex caulk. Problem is I can't seem to get the humidity above 85%. I fan twice a day and spray the sides with a mist of water. Is there anything else I can do? I'm thinking it's this cheap gauge I bought at Petsmart(Fluker). Any ideas? Strain is B+ and 1 Ecuador if that makes a difference. Thanks.

perlite should provide sufficient humidity. what kind of hygrometer do you have? if it isn't digital then you should try to calibrate it. when i got mine it was quite a bit off.

It's just the cheap gage.

I'm not sure what you mean by the perlite being "damp". Perlite is either wet or dry. When you wet it leave about 1 cm of standing water in the bottom. The water will evap soon enough and by then you will know what 99% humidity looks like in your chamber.

Make sure your chamber is not warmer than the air around it, then if you get condensation you will know that you have 100% humidity.

nevermind that, i just saw what kind you have. :bongload:

try fanning only once a day so the humidity can build up longer.

For maximum humidity with perlite, put it in a strainer and run water through it until it's wet, then allow to drain completely. Dump into your terrarium, and you'll have 99% humidity within an hour or two. Damp perlite prepared as above will maintain that 99% in a terrarium for thirty days or so, at which time you repeat the process. Any standing water will lower the humidity by reducing the surface area of the perlite that is exposed to the air.

The small reduction in surface area that 1 cm of standing water will cause is not anywhere near enough to lower the humidity and will ensure that perlite is wet and providing humidity.

This has been proven BTW, evaporation of surface area can only result when the RH is lower than 100% and this only occurs in roughly the top inch of perlite. This is the way I've always done it (water/h2o2 at half the depth of the perlite) with excellent results but as RogerRabbit pointed out moist perlite will keep evaporating for 30 days of course that will depend on how well the FC is sealed as well as how many FAE's you are doing as well as the depth of the perlite as well as........ well I hope you get the point.
