What in god's name is this?

These were taken off of a stump. They remind me of a hardened stem from a Dryad's saddle, but they look sort of like reishi antlers. Charcoal black on the outside.

Any ideas?

So is that a polypore?
Poopy people: If you felt these specimens, you'd understand they were far too firm to be poop. Unless it was from grandpa.

Its a member of the Ascomycota, placed in a class called the Pyrenomycetes.

This is actually a "species complex," which is what mycologists like to call a group of closely related species that we can't (yet) easily distinguish from one another. There may be as many as 5 to 10 species masquerading under the name Xylaria polymorpha.
