100% Vermiculite casing
    #5897823 - 07/25/06 11:17 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Hey, my first post on here...

ive been following the PF Tek and most of my cakes are ready to case. Im thinking of doing a 100% verm casing to keep it simple for my first time.

Can anyone tell me what to do...
ie do i put dry verm on the bottom, then my mycelium substrate, then damp verm on top..

does it matter that the dry verm isnt sterilised.. etc

thanks alot

the bottom layer of verm is optional... it can absorb moisture should you overwater or your casing is too moist, but it can work against you and suck moisture out of a casing if its already on the dry side making it even dryer. some folks use it, some don't, and some have really strong opinions on which way you should. have tried both ways, personally saw no difference, so i never use it simply because its less effort and less materials to skip it.

sterilizing verm isn't really necessary. its non-nutritous so it doesn't really harbor contams in the first place. its created by using really high heat to begin with so its basically sterile when its made, there may be some possible contaminate spores that have landed in it during packaging and since you've opened the package, but they should be relatively few and not significant. if you want peace of mind, you can very easily bake it in an oven (crank it right up to like 400 degrees, you won't hurt it... bake for 20 minutes or so).

peat/verm casings are very very simple..

But anywho, you dont really need the verm on the bottom. Your verm doen't need to be sterilized if it if fresh out of an unopenend or sealed bag. I would just break up the cake maybe let it sit sealed up for 12 hours to recover a little then put a moist verm layer on top. You really should look into peat/verm casings though, it's super easy.

Yea, skip the bottom layer you don't need it and you'll get much better results by using that space to make your substrate layer thicker.

I always sterilized my verm after moisturizing it, but I used a hepa filtered FC. I've never heard of problems with not sterilizing it but YMMV.
