I would like to step up the potency from BRF cakes and go with WBS cased with verm. Will this make a noticable difference?

I'm not sure about the potency level, but I know working with WBS is easy to do.
I completely skipped the PF-tek and went WBS. I forget exactly why, probably the yield difference in between the two. Just make sure you soak it. Soaking allows bacterial endospores to germinate. After germination you PC them and they all die leaving nice and healthy grain for your mycelium. Here are the instructions that were given to me *and have yet to fail*.
1) Measure out WBS 2) Put WBS into strainer and rinse in warm water till the water runs clear. I plug the drain to see what color the water is running. Put into a soaking pot after rinsed. 3) Soak in a warm coffee solution for 24-48 hours. I just fill it up with warm sink water, add a cup or two of hot coffee and put a lid on it. I was instucted to use gypsum, but I didn't have access to any and it has yet to bite me in the ass. 4) After 24(I've managed to get away with 12 hours fine though) hours of soaking the solution the WBS is supsended in should be cloudy and bubbling. A nice(subjectable to opinion) fermentated smell should arise from the mixture. If you plan to soak for 48 hours you want to drain the pot and add more coffee solution. **If you have sunflower seed in your WBS it should rise to the top and make for easy straining. Try to get that sunflower seed out of the mixture!** 5) After the soaking period scoop out the seed into the strainer again and rinse with warm water till it runs clear. 6) After rinsing set each 'clean' batch to the side to drain. Let it sit for atleast 5 to 10 minutes. If you have a lot in your strainer make sure to tilt the strainer side to side, because extra water tends to pool up inside. This is also a good point and time to dry out your seeds if you plan on using an LC. Dry the seed out longer if you want to use a lot of LC. 7) After the seed is strained place into containers for PCing.
Taa dah! I'm a nub and this has yet to fail on me. I have 5 bags(first trys too) chugging along in my closet right now. 1 GT, 2 B+, and 2 Cambos none have contamed yet, and 2/5 are 2 or 3 days from completion.
The above WBS soaking 'guide' was dirived from monstermitch

There's no way to increase potency with substrate material. Potency depends on the genetics of the strain, then substrain. Poo, grains, straw, etc.--I have tried them all. The fruits were all about the same potency. WBS spawned to a bulk will give you a wonderful yield if successful, though. GL.

I can't really comment on WBS since I always had very poor results with it compared to rye. But I can tell you that rye instead of BRF will result in a noticeable potency improvement.
