wierd shrooms

Hello everyone, My buddys friend is trying to grow his first shrooms using eq's on brf. He birthed the cakes, and got pins, but they dont grow into the mushroom stem, they just seem to get bigger around, and end up looking somewhat like golf balls. He was wondering what could be causing this. He searched for an answer and found none, so he asked me to post. any ideas?

Give em a few more days... they should start to grow stems... The golfball thing is prolly just the cap forming on the primordia/pin.
If I'm right, they should be som nice shrooms!!!!

i had shrooms do the same-they just got big like a golf ball-the cap stayed small-it even opened like that-the stem was bigger around than the cap when it opened-i couldnt figure out why-i had lots of them do this-the strain was lipa yai-

on most of the shrooms, the caps arnt opening. they just stay small and part of the golf ball, like a huge pin. then they stop growing. Is there something he is doing wrong that would cause this? and these really are almost the size of a golf ball. He just wants a normal shroom:(

actually the cap almost turned insode out while the stem turned the size of a golf ball-i could see the gills exposed on the TOP-sound familiar?most didnt open though

Yeah, that is almost exactly what is happening. How did you get your shrooms to grow normally? do you know what caused it?

Are you using any weird or excessive chemicals to sterilize the environment? What's the humidity level?

nope no chemicals-all natural here :smile: just some lysol every now and then when i clean my house :smile: i dont *spray* everytime i open my terrarium-
by chance are those LIPA YAI that you have doing that User? mine were Lipa Yai-
i didnt get them to grow normal-they never did-a few matured from the cake-the rest didnt -the looked like a golfball when i plucked them-i just dried them and ate them-LOL
hell a shroom is a shroom-the all bruise

and also my humidty is very high-we dont have a perlite shortage here at my house :smile: i have about 20-25 gallons in my grow room unopened-i went and bought a case of 8 qt bags :smile:

well... he did sorta kinda mix in a really diluted solution of pinesol into the pearlite to keep the contams down, but the cakes are sitting on lids, so no direct contact. He didnt have a hydrometer at first, but now its steady at around 90%, might have been lower before. Temp is around 73-74. He picked them b/c he didnt want them to rot, and more cakes are pinning now, We just wanted to see if there was anything that we could do to make them look like normal shrooms. These are the equador strain if that makes any difference. thanks.

I dont think you shouldve done that with the pinesol, maybe next time use hydrogen peroxide (available at all grocery stores or pharmacies). Maybe you shouldve taken a look at the warnings on the pinesol bottle before you used it to fill a reservoir that ultimately feeds your cakes, which feeds you.

Change the pinesol outta there and then see whatcha get. Good luck bro

hey these shrooms are really nothing to worry about.
i've had my share of weirdo looking ones. i've had just caps grow... as in no stems. i've had a shroom grow literally upside down... as in it started with a cap and then the stem grew outwards. lately i've got a nice batch of "bums" they're all white, no cap, they look like... little bums. i've also got some that are 2 that joined together so it looks like a horseshoe.
i find them quite fascinating. but i mean growing shrooms are more than just the fun that comes with eating them. they're just so damn cute
after a while they go away. so don't worry... it's just an omen that you will be turned inside out.

Yeah, he found out right after he added the pinesol that his roommate had a bottle of H2O2. I'll make sure he uses it in the future. Thanks to all that have helped on my first post. It's people like you that make this hobby fun.
