Finally something in Colorado

It's been *really* dry here this year so far. We're on track to break the record, set in 2002, for the driest year ever. On the positive side, the monsoon rains have started, so things are looking better.
I decided to go out today near Fraser and walk around in the woods. Here are a few things I found:
Amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata. I took this photo because this specimen shows the multiple parallel rings the volva forms in this species. No ring is visible because the partial veil hadn't broken yet.
Galerina marginata. Deadly poisonous. Anybody who hunts wild mushrooms that they intend to eat should know enough to be certain the mushroom they're eating is not this one.
Chanterelles. I didn't really expect to find any of these, they generally come up a bit later in the season here. There weren't many of them yet, but if the rains continue, it might be a good year for them. An interesting bit of trivia on these - chanterelles here *never* have bugs in them. I have picked hundreds of pounds of them and sliced and cooked them without ever finding even a single maggot in one, no matter how old.
Boletus edulis buttons. These guys are just getting started, a bit later than usual. Unlike the chanterelles (some of which were growing only about 4 feet away), most of these had a few maggots in them. Even so, to my taste, they're still a better tasting mushroom than the chanterelles.
Happy mushrooming!

Excellent. I'm glad you're having some luck. Great Fly Agaric too, classic looking.

Hopefully the rains will pick up by mid august so they'll be fruiting wildly by the last weekend for the telluride festival. We brought home a huge bag of boletes last year. Cool looking chanties. Ours in the PNW are orange, those are yellow. RR

Actually, in person they're pretty orange. The photo just came out really yellow.

Nice post ToxicMan, I've been to Leadville, CO. I have some elderly reletives up there. I must say, that mountainous Colorado is the most beatiful country I've ever ventured into. Camping is great there.
I look forward to more edible posts from ya.

Nice finds and nice photography ToxicMan.
Yesterday I spoke to my sister who lives in Colorado. She found some king boletes at about 10,000 feet yesterday, and she also said she found some false morels.
She will be happy to hear that chanterelles are blooming there.
