Tobacco expected to kill 1 billion this century
July 10, 2006 - AP - MSNBC

WASHINGTON - If current trends hold, tobacco will kill a billion people this century, 10 times the toll it took in the 20th century, public health officials said Monday.

Tobacco accounts for one in five cancer deaths, or 1.4 million deaths worldwide each year, according to two new reference guides that chart global tobacco use and cancer. Lung cancer remains the major cancer among the 10.9 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year, according to the Cancer Atlas.

Reducing tobacco use would have the greatest affect on global cancer rates, health officials said. Improving nutrition and reducing infection by cancer-causing viruses and bacteria could also cut rates dramatically, they said.

“We know with cancer, if we take action now, we can save 2 million lives a year by 2020 and 6.5 million by 2040,” said Dr. Judith Mackay, a World Health Organization senior policy adviser.

The new Cancer Atlas and updated Tobacco Atlas were released Monday at a International Union Against Cancer conference. The American Cancer Society published the two atlases with help from the Union, WHO and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Even if smoking rates decline worldwide, there will be a constant or even slightly increasing number of smokers due to population increases,” said Michael Eriksen, director of the Institute of Public Health at Georgia State University.

An estimated 1.25 billion men and women smoke cigarettes now, according to the Tobacco Atlas.

I smoke cigarettes and I am aware of the risks...

It is a form of slow suicide, and I shouldn't be forced to pay higher taxes on it....

If I were still drinking I would have been dead two years ago, so whatever...

I love your avatar. There are many drugs out there that numb you to the world, let you escape the stresses of real life, and prevent true and meaningful self-reflection. I would argue that nicotine is one of those drugs, whereas other more mystical substances like psilocybin take one for a journey within one's own consciousness and allow them to explore the facets of their very being hopefully leading to spiritual growth.

As a hardcore, orthodox, card-carrying smoker, with a highly-refined, deeply romanticist, attachment to my own mortality, and the lovely creaking sounds of my own decay, I find this information reassuring somehow...

The only problem is, that this is exactly the kind of extrapolated pseudo-factoid that can be harnessed by an ant-like army of rampant do-gooders in their ongoing quest to legislate and regulate the humanity out of the human condition; to replace the gritty noise and grimy chaos of choice and freedom with a bright and shiny future of safe, hygienic, simulated life. A bright and promising vision of the future, where all cooperative citizens will get two flying cars in every heliopad, and a tangerine-blue tofu-turkey in every pot. And for those of us who don't yet have the "intelligence" to be good citizens, there will be some friendly tricyclic and bicyclic reprogramming. This way, we too shall be able to bask in the shining utopian light of life as an endless shopping mall, devoid of uncomfortable political statements, dingy smoke-filled carcinogenic air, and dirty homeless people. A utopian vision of smoke-free, reduced fat, bliss on a stick!

I know this is my problem, and not society's. I'm an drunken painter, and I just don't fit in too well with such situations. Give me the grimy bygone alleyways of Montmartre and Montparnasse with their soot, slime, and disease; of the romantic image of a tubercular Modigliani choking his life away on stone dust and cigarettes, while burning ever brighter as a creative talent. In short, I'm simply an anachronism, a dinosaur of free-will individualism, who respects pain and death, and who simply has no place in the godless cookie-cutter world of the coming hive collective, but I digress...

What was this thread about again?
