How big must the vortex be from a stir plate?

I made a HDD/fan DIY stir plate and I'm wondering how big the dimple must be. I don't get anything near the vortex I see in other pictures, but more of a dimple the diameter of a dime and maybe a 1/4 inch deep (and that's only in about 3 inches of water). I'm not sure where the bottleneck is in my construction, but is this enough turbulence for a LC? For a stir bar I'm using a 1/4 inch piece of metal the thickness of a guitar string (the thickest of the 6).

your "stir bar" is probably too small. a bigger one has more surface that will push more water.
that being said, you don't even really want a dimple. just enough to cause a little turbulence in the water is enough to stimulate growth. its nice to be able to crank it up real fast to chop it into bits though at a few points during colonization and before drawing solution... but that may not be a luxury you'll have with a homebuilt one.
either way what you got sounds like it will do just fine and certainly should stimulate growth.

Increase your stir bar size. About 1 inch, to 1.5 inch.
That will give you more vortex action.
While others may differ (and will).
I have found that a 1 inch galvanized roofing mail works miracles.
Both for vortex action, and mincing myc.
The slight spinning metal, on glass sound, reminds me the stir plate in ON, also.

Your vortex is fine. The stuff you see in videos is just to show off. It looks far more impressive than a dimple.

Thanks for the comments guys, but now it seems I'm wondering about the other end of the spectrum. I found a combination that gets a really fantastic vortex (2 inches deep in 4 inches of water and bubbles trailing all the way to the bottom). Should I try to aim for a certain vortex or is this fine? The transformer I'm using has different voltage settings and if it's turned down to 9V, the vortex shrinks to 1/2 it's size (but the nail's swirling becomes louder). So now that I know I can get practically any vortex I need, I'm wondering, what's best?
I've seen a lot about making the stir plates but so far nothing about the otimal characteristics of them. Has anyone experimented with different RPM/vortexs?

It's not going to matter that much. Just remember that you're trying to gently stir the myc, not constantly beat the fuck out of it. If you're just going to stir for a minute or two every so often then it would be best to have a higher RPM. If you're going to use constant stirring then it would be best to have a RPM that is probably lower than what you can produce with a computer fan. So keep that in mind.
