You want used coffee grinds because they've been leached. Mix at any rate you want. There are no rules. You can also throw in horse manure, worm castings, cow manure, compost, etc., in whatever mix you dream up at the time. It's all good. If your mix seems heavy, cut with up to 50% vermiculite. Don't forget to lime to ph8 and add up to ten percent gypsum. Don't count the verm when figuring how much gypsum or lime to use.

Hi - How's it going? Do you ever add lime and gypsum to substrate - or just to casing? Is the PH of substrate important?

Thanks
Shaq

sure do.

adding things like coffee to your sub will lower the pH. mold favors low pH. while a properly prepared bulk sub will usually colonize in time before that's a problem, its in your best interest to balance it back out, and buffer it a little over 7. gypsum helps to stabalize the pH and provides a source of calcium, which is important in mycelium's metabolic process.

its more important to pH buffer a casing because its out and exposed in the open, but buffering your substrate is also a good practice for optimal growth.

i used raw coffee grounds in 4 of my small coir casings and none of them contamed, but the spawn ratio on most was 1:2 so it didn't leave much time to contam..
