Got the spider ID'd
    #5890601 - 07/23/06 01:43 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Called my father's friend today (an exterminator) and he eased my conscience.

Triangulate cobweb spider: Steatoda triangulosa

I tried unsuccessfully to get a picture for you, but if I had one it would look exactly like the ones on this site.

http://www.uark.edu/depts/entomolo/museum/steatoda.html

Where I found most of the webs.. radiator, crawl space/closet under my stairs, on the underside of a recliner, etc:

Quote:

This small household spider is easily overlooked as it weaves cobwebs in the dark corners of houses, basements, and outbuildings. The body is only about 1/8 to ΒΌ inch long.

Quote:

It is rare in South America. In North America it is widespread and abundant locally in and on houses.

Why I originally thought they were gnats since they seemed to float:

Quote:

These spiders build irregular webs and suspend themselves from these snares while waiting for unsuspecting prey to approach.

^ Also, when they bit, it seemed like they come from nowhere.

Why I've been finding other dead spiders for no apparent reason around the house:

Quote:

It has been known to prey on many kinds of arthropods, including ants, spiders (including the brown recluse), ticks, and pillbugs (Guarisco 1991).

We had an ant problem early this summer and they suddenly disappeared. Wonder why? :P My friend who studied insects for two years before switching to economics noted that the white flecks in my lint trap were 'old spider food'.

If it's not triangulosa, father's friend said, it's definitely a steatoda. Less clutter in closets, more Raid, and more general cleanliness in areas where one does not venture will kill off this infestation.

Thank you, everybody, for your concern and your help in my earlier thread. Thanks, TheHateCamel, for thinking outside of the box. I've been so pissed lately because these things have been "no-see-um"s and everyones been thinking I'm fuckin nuts.. except for my girlfriend who is hypersensitive to this type of bite. I just got fed up with hearing "you may just have heebie-jeebies because she has bites". No, I was getting bit and it hurt like fuck.

Here's a pic of the type of irregular webbing that was in the closet, radiator, under furniture, odd corners, the furance room:

Teh pic TEK

1..go to http://images.google.com/
2..type "steatoda" and press SEARCH
3..pick your spider out of the 100s of pics
4..in firefox, rightclick pic and select "view picture"
5..use the subsequent URL to make the pic show up in your post

works every time and you don't have to upload the pic itself to the Shroomery:thumbup:

Just look around the pics and select the right one, in case its not a trangulosa. I'm glad we're getting closer and closer to what exactly is lurking in your house!

The odd thing about triangulosa sites is that 90% say they bite and hurt like bloody hell, 10% say they don't bite at all.

they are unlikely to bite as they are reclusive
they are combfoots, just like the sidow spiders (latrodectus)
they have simmilar behavior. the venom is not nearly as dangerous tho.

What'd your dad's friend say? Spot spray them? I'd spray every web/nest possible.

Newp. Spiders eat bugs. Unlike other bugs, they don't clean their legs by "licking them". Regular bugs will get poison on their legs then lick it off and die. Only way to kill spiders (to my knowledge) is to spray them directly.

I'm glad you at least got it ID'd.  I was reading your last thread...you poor thing :frown:  I really hope you don't have to take apart the aquariums.  I have 3 aquariums in my house myself (and some fry as well!) and I think if something happened and I had to dismantle them, even to move them, I would have conniption.  Keep us updated.

I like the kinds of spiders that stay in corners and keep to themselves.. getting rid of other bugs and minding their own business. It's when they get into beds and start biting me that I have a problem!

theres no way id be able to sleep with a spider in the corner. actually, there are spiders probly in my room right now.
/shudder

i think once the traffic in the house picks up they might move in the dark corners and leave me alone. ive been walking into a lot of webs and its pissing me off.

Just saw one crawling on the wall in here. I didn't ever bother going after it.

I have a few (of what I think are) spider bites on me right now. Something keeps getting me when I'm in bed.

I'd bite those fuckers back is I could find 'em. :hehehe:

The irony behind this is that my entire life, since probably the age of six, I've captured any bug I've found inside my house and let it back outside - wasps/hornets/bees, spiders, moths, etc. I don't even slap mosquitos; I brush them away.

And this is what I get =P

And yes, Gumby, spot spraying. Less nooks+crannies for them to hide in. Seal any areas where they may get in.

Since these spiders react to vibrations on their webs I'm thinking: hole above bed with massive amounts of webs behind it + sleeping/sex = spiders thinking that there was food making their webs vibrate.

I'm still amazed how fast they built these webs. I really should have taken pictures.. it would give you ALL nightmares. I was RELIEVED to find daddy long legs webs and other common spiderwebs in some areas.

I requested the thread dumped because of that. I already have enough problems (anxiety, mild depression, bouts of minor OCD) and I don't want this community to think I'm a total fuckin whackjob. (Not that it really matters, I guess.) I have a therapist to diagnose my problems, not some half-wit.

But, I digress.

I went to get the mail today and saw the unique web on the house (it was only 4-6"). Opened the garage to find it wrapped around into the garage. Was roughly 18-22" long including the outside web and all of it was fresh. Raided it and put the dead spider under a magnifying glass. Bingo. It was the biggest one I've seen.. monitoring an egg sack. =P

Downstairs bedroom -> crawlspace/closet ->far wall inside is the garage's wall on the other side. There's a small opening about this wide | | at its diagonal peak between the sheetrock and where it meets the concrete steps outside.

Sealed it up with caulk.

If I can keep them from coming inside, I'm golden.

I'm really grateful for all of the effort everyone put in to the original thread. It means a lot to me. This is truly a wonderful community.

I'm going to start putting much more effort into posting in ODD again. You guys are fantastic.

I"m just very sensitive to any kind of suffering...after going through opiate addiction/withdrawl I have a whole new respect and sympathy for suffering

I truely care about ppl(even if I don't know them well) and because I have ocd, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, ptsd I know what suffering is...I don't live a "normal" life yet because I can't...tho I'm taking the steps I need to get over it...without cbt(which I HIGHLY recommend) I wouldn't even be posting right now and I would not have met the girl of my dreams...I couldn't even sit down here at the pc for fear of making a fool outta myself

I've come to realize I don't see myself as others do...I get a lot of ppl telling me I'm genius etc(pretty much daily in my real life) and it gets on my nerves sometimes to be honest...cause it just creates pressure and I Need to take things slow and I'm so afraid of letting my ego surpass what I am(and afraid of being wrong) cause if I'm wrong that means the path I'm taking could be wrong

Walrus, we really gotta chat sometime via AIM or another messaging service. We could probably help each other out with what's worked for anxiety/PTSD (mine was bad for 2 years solid) and the like. Sounds like we have very much in common. I'm so glad that all of my disorders (I hate that word) are healing rapidly at this time, so maybe some of the things I'm doing may help you. You're certainly not alone, and at the very least, I'm sure we'd have an interesting conversation.

Check your PMs.

Phishe - IT was an excellent book and movie. That and Desperation are the only two film adaptations of Stephen King's that I can say were done very well (I have some issues with the movie but that's a whole thread in and of itself!). Nightmares and Dreamscapes on TNT is really fantastic. Carrie is a classic - book and movie - but that goes unsaid.

The worst part about this spider ordeal is my girlfriend is arachnophobic, so I couldn't help but feel her pain emotionally+physically as well as my own.

A week straight waking up with 30 wasp-like stings and not sleeping for more than 2 hours = a very irate man. I'm so glad this is over. You guys really don't know how much it means to me when we were ruling things out.

Also very glad it wasn't bedbugs! Yuck!
