bad pic & caps
    #5890460 - 07/23/06 12:54 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

i found these growing on a horse manure pile, unfortunately i got to them late and the caps were mush. i am just looking for your thoughts on what they are nothing definitive

habitat - horse manure pile

cap and gills - this is where my prob was they were mush when i got to them all i can say is they were small and dark and stained the bag black

stem - hollow and sturdy ranged from 1 inch to 4 inches, they were white

anything you can tell me is a help, i will try to get back for a better sample after the next rain

I can never resist trying to collect these for study.... Even in this shape I still put them with my other finds. The just look so cool.

I kick myself later when the ink has covered half the mushrooms i collected and is a total mess.

Here in Houston they have been working on I-10 for a few years now.. They went threw and put wood chips along the sides of the freeway where they have finished work..
After the heavy rains at the beginning of this month I saw what I would call the largest concentration of Inky Caps I have ever seen...
A slice of land about 50 feet wide and over 100 yards long was nothing but Inky caps.. The large ones!
I saw them at 7am and by 9am they were all nothing but white stems standing up in the air.. Another 3 hours and they were gone completely.. Id be safe if I said it must have been over a million mushrooms!
Man I sure wish I could have been able to photograph that!
