High Mountian or Tenn Stud?
    #5890161 - 07/23/06 12:48 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys a friend of mine is looking to do a bulk grow. Where he lives he doesn't have access to non commercial horse shit without an hour and half drive just ask if he can get it.

So he is looking to the vendors. His question is in everyones opinions which would be better in the end since he does have to this rout. Compost or Manure? Both are good and great I know.

If you had to make this choice what would it be is what I'm asking?

Why not try Worm Castings? They are an easy to work with, contam resistant, and extremely high yielding substrate that encourages MANY flushes.

We have it pre-pasteurized, and dry, if you want to pasteurize yourself. Pre-Pasteurized Worm Poo

Wow and a fraction of the cost! Me likey.

Also hear Coir is good but haven't found a great description on how to use it as a straight sub.

Has some one made a good tek with photos regarding Coir?

Imho, it is well worth the drive.
Even if you have to spend all day, to get a tote, trunk, or pick/up load full of h/poo.

That way you can often get 50, 150, or 1200 lbs, FREE.
In other words, a large supply on hand, for future use.

Take your lady. Have a picnic.

LOL thats funny.

I agree, why spend all that dough when you can have 100's of times more...for FREE. I mean, FREE is pretty cheap I think.

While I agree, there is nothing better than free, time is money.

Driving 2 hours each way into the sticks, getting looked at crooked by hillbillies, to pick up feces in the heat is not QUITE my idea of FREE. Especially with gas at $3+ a gallon.

Thats why we're here, to pick up your shit!

Oh, and from what I've heard, if you have the money, compost is the way to go. Tenn Stud is just poop, or poop and straw. Whereas high mountain compost is specifically formulated for growing mushrooms. HMC contains horse poop, but also has other things composted along with it. It's supposed to be the ideal bulk substrate, but unfortunately I cannot vouche for them because I've never used their product. (although I did hold a short conversation with the owner about the price and quality of his compost)

Anyways, if you've got money, I'd say compost would be better in the end... But that's just me. So far I've used COIR, HPOO and just fruited wbs cased. The wbs cased finished first and just gave me a whopping 76 grams wet. The coir has not only surpassed the hpoo i made, it actually lapped it. I made my hpoo tubs about a week and a half before the coir tubs, and the coir not only finished colonizing in just a few days, but it finished before the hpoo and the poo had a week and a half head start. So now I've got 2 double tubs of wbs->coir cased with 50/50 that are pinning, and 2 tubs of hpoo still trying to colonize. I've heard people having good luck with tennstud, but I can't vouch for that, my tennstud obviously sucked balls. (and was expensive if you think about it... i mean, it's shit. you are paying for someone to mail you SHIT. I usually get very upset and sometimes will cry when people send me poop in the mail)

Anyways, have fun making your decision.

speaking of which, i have a hard enough time storing all 110lbs of my lady... dunno where i'd put 150lbs of poo.  (i haven't found a tek to pasteurize her yet either... she won't sit still and keeps climbing out of the pillow case :frown:)

haha but anyway, that's one of the beauties of coir is that its compressed so well i DO have space to store a bunch of it inconspicuously, smell free, indoors.  here's agar's  coir as a substrate thread.  im preparing a small monotub of coir later today, maybe if im feeling industrious i'll photograph things and make a more detailed write-up... its really as easy as he makes it sound but a better description of the steps might clue more people in to it easier... not to mention a few things i do slightly different.

Yeah sounds real romantic. I can see it now "Hey baby, wanna help me pick up horshit all day?" Afterwards we can have a picnic and eat food with our hands" lol

No but really. Gass is way too expensive for that and, like others have said I where to store the poo. Thanks for the advice everyone.
I think he is going with coir or worms.

I can definitely vouch for High Mountain Compost. It is EXCELLENT substrate. Huge, healthy flushes of meaty fruits.

The only downsides are the price, and spending hours breaking up the little clumps before you use it.

Thats one of the things we really like about worm castings, they dont clump like horse poo/compost, so it lowers the amount of time the substrate is exposed, eliminating a rather large vector for contamination. Just empty into a container, add spawn, quickly mix and your done.

Hmm, I wonder what HMC mixed with Worm Castings would be like? We'll supply a free filter patch bag of Pre-Pasteurized Worm Castings Bulk Substrate Blend to anyone willing to experiment. First come first served.

Im down, and i already have a 10lb bag of HMC.. Would you like a 50/50 or maybe a 60/40 , 70/30 with HMC / worm castings?

this thread has turned into a Vendor product choice thing...

rather than what substrate would work best.

I'm moving this to the Vendor forum.

and Mudshark...please stay out of the Mush Cult with your products.

you are only allowed to advertise and sell products in the Sponsor/Vendor forum!~

Really?  Sorry, I must have missed that in the vendor rules.

I was just weighing in on what I think the better substrate is.

Won't happen again

I'm going to change the pricing on the site, so that it lists the weight as well as the container.

The medium bags are 5lbs. The large bags are 15 lbs.

damn straight!

even if free involved a truck just dumping the shit on my lawn there is still considerable effort involved in generating a consistent and relatively trash-free product such as you get from some of our fine vendors.

Tenn-Stud even contained a bonus gift, of an allen wrench - once.
Not long ago.....

I would think, that was a bit hard on his shredder.
