Home Stereo wha?

I'm moving to a new pad in a few weeks and want a nice home stereo. I had originally planned to drop 300-500usd on something decent (speakers, reciever, and cd player) but for some reason home stereo equipment is extravagantly priced. You can buy a nice, complete, brand name, home theatre package with surround sound for that price and I could put a lovely system in a car with that money but I'm struggling to do this on my budget, not to mention I don't know shit about home audio products.
My other option, which I like just as much, is to build a cheapo system for like 100-150$ out of an amalgamation of pawn shop and garage sale finds. I still don't know what I should be looking for though, so if anyone could drop a few brands for recievers and speakers and whatnot, or even product lines, wow...would that ever be helpful.
This is just for music by the way, not a rig for movies and games.

I think you'll be surprised at what 5.1 sound can do for a movie. As soon as you hear it, I think you will change your mind about using the system "just for music".
Spend the $500 on the home system and get a nice rig. That way you can use it for lots of different things.

Perhaps I haven't made myself clear enough. I don't own a television and don't really care for movies all that much. As far as I know, surround sound is useless for music. Furthermore, while I'm aware of the multitudes of home theatre packages, I don't what to avoid and what to pursue. You found something in 30seconds... that's great...but it's designed for MOVIES!!! Those shitty little surround sound speakers aren't going to do much for me. Sorry I didn't make myself more clear earlier.
