I found these growing on a golf course earlier today.
they were in the grass near the greens, they are about 1-2.5 inches tall,
the gills are dark brown and are not connected to the stem, there is a dark ring on the outer edge of the cap.
and they print really dark brown.
*the dark ring fades over time.
Thanks for any help.

The dark brown spore print, mowed lawn habitat, and general appearance all suggest Panaeolina. They look different than the very common Panaeolina foenisecii though.

Not something you would want to eat.

I remember other posts with similar mushrooms last summer in Virginia. Except for the near bell shaped caps they resemble Paneolina as Shroomydan says. Are the Gills Mottled like Paneolus Subbalteatus or Feonisecii?

I was under the impression that Panaeolina Foenesecii was the only Panaeolina. I guess I was wrong.

These look like a variation of the "Balloon mushrooms"... But a major difference is that these mushrooms actually drop spores, whereas all the finds of the "balloons" i have seen, have yeilded no spore print.  In the second photo you can see a smaller mushroom which may be a different species all together, or a white gilled and more rounded phenotypical feature of the specimen of the same species.... I dunno, but similar mushrooms have been found occurring next to one another.

SmokinBJ,
Just to clarify, did you actually get a print from one of these? I have been speculating that these along with the "Ballon" type mushrooms are secotioid, and thus not capable of dropping spores. If you have pictures of any prints please post.
Thanks
