Soil P.h.
    #5888756 - 07/22/06 08:06 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

My friend is off to buy a soil p.h. tester for his plants. He is going to buy lime for raising p.h. but what can he use to lower it. What p.h. should the soil be at? Should acidic fertilizers be neutrilized by raising the p.h. of them or should they be used as they are?

7 is too high

6.5 for maximum nutrient availability in soil.

Organic methods
To reduce the pH by approximately 1.0 unit, use:
Peat - dug into your soil at the rate of approximately 2.5 lbs per square yard
Compost - dug into your soil at the rate of approximately 14 lbs per square yard
Manure - dug into your soil at the rate of approximately 5 lbs per square yard

Anyone else?
It would be impractical for him to change his p.h. by digging peat or manure into the soil because it's just a couple of indoor plants.

using only rainwater will lower the ph of your soil some, but commonly aluminum sulfate and sulfur are used to reduce soil ph, you can buy this from most garden centers. aluminium reduces the soil right away and sulfur will slowly reduce the ph.
