Patching Early

I've got two 9"x12" monotubs 4" deep with with WBS spawned to hpoo. My guess is they're about 2-3 days away from being 100%.
What would happen if I patched now? My guess is that the casing layer would get chewed through like normal while the substrate finished up. What could go wrong?

PS: Don't tell me I should wait. I KNOW I should wait. I'm just trying to figure out why.
PPS: What do you call a monotub with no FAE holes?

putting a casing on something that's colonizing could introduce a lot of contams... remember, the reason we use 100% colonized cakes and casings is because they're resistant...
unless of course you already cased it before it was 100%, then patching would probably be a good idea.
Also, you're supposed to put a casing into the FC right after patching so you can avoid overlay. If your sub is still colonizing and you case, there's a chance you'd get some bad overlay.

Crap. I did write "patch," didn't I? I mean "case."
I'll just wait. It's not that I don't want to wait, it's that I'm terrible at knowing when the colonization of the hpoo is done. I think it's done now but I'm not quite sure.

heh, I just do it when there's myc touching every piece of the top layer.

WBS--->Poo is exactly what I use, exclusively. It's amazing how quick the mycelium can run through a properly hydrated bulk substrate. If it's close to 100% colonized, it'll be ready in a day or so. My advice is give it a day or two after it appears to be fully colonized. It helps the myc to form a tighter network, helping it to be more resistant to contams and aids in denser, more consistent pinsets, IMHO. Patching in a monotub is not neccessary if you get your initial casing layer uniformly layered, and do not go too deep with it. Wait until around 10-20% of your casing layer has myc poking through (depending on your tub size), and introduce fruiting conditions. Provide proper light and FAE, and you'll get some of these.

I've got the patching timing down pat. It's the casing layer application that has me thrown.
So ...what do you call a monotub with no holes? =)
