My contamination rate is under 1%.

That is the second grain jar ever, to have contaminated.

So, life, and the mycology Gods are pretty good to me.

I just posted it, so others would know what it looked like.

An inexperienced person, might just spoon it out, into a substrate, or worse yet, G2G.

Nice pic. Pin mold is a thermophilic fungi and is stimulated by high temperatures. Perhaps the best preventative is incubating at optimal temperatures, 75F to 80F.

In the past, I incubated at 80/84F.

This go, I followed your advice RR, and incubated at room temperatures, in metal filing cabinets.

Ambient temperatures were 72/75F, sometimes 79/80F on a sweltering day.

I have built in air/con, and whole house size evaporative cooler.

A lesson learned was, don't over-crowd grain jars.

That way, you can see the top of the grains, as well as what is in contact with the glass.

Before opening a jar, inspect each very carefully.

I was spawning trays. Before I opened this jar, I noticed that it had something funny on top.

So, I isolated it. And, proceeded on with spawning.

After I was done, and cleaned up the work area.

I opened it, in still air, so as not to blow mold spores around, and took that picture. Then, carefully closed it, and injected 60 ml of sudsy/clorox/lysol into it, to kill the beasts. I clean out and recycle 99% of jars.

If a jar was ever FULL of blue/green. Then, it would go in the trash, UNOPENED. Simply because, the risk is so high, you could contaminate yourself, your clothing, and the whole household, with a heavy dose of nasties..

I can see some more mold at about the 5 o'clock position near the bottom of the picture. Is it my monitor or does that stuff look brown rather than black?

That is just shadow from the picture.

Jar content was snow white.

The only mold was on the surface, right under the lid.

I gather the jar was clean. Then, I shook it at 10 or 15% colonization.

It still was clean.

Only thing I can figure was.

Some condensation was on the underside of the lid. Then, the mold spores wicked through the micropore tape & into the jar when it was very close to 100% colonized.

If you were looking at it, close up, in person. You can see it run across the underside of the lid, down the glass, and onto the jar content surface. :mad2:

I only had it open a moment.
I took the picture, then screwed the lid back on.
Then, injected a disinfectant solution, to kill that crap.
