okay, so i've done some research, it sounds to me like oyster mushrooms as well as shiitakes grow on grains (i read usually wheat or rye is used...) Can i grow these types of mushies using BRF in the PF Tek method (if not, what kind of mushies can i besides cubes?)? If this is feasible, then where would be the best place to get the spores from? one suggestion was to just take spore prints from store bought mushies then make my own syringes and go from there....i've looked about on the internet a bit for spores of these types of mushies, but all i can really find are those spawn plugs that you put into wood...Any info will help!! post away!

search in the gourmet & medicinal forum. As far as obtaining a culture of edible varieties, Sporeworks (a Shroomery sponsor) has quite a selection at reasonable prices.
If you want to try and fruit from a store-bought mushroom you need to learn agar techniques and take a sterile culture from the interior of the fruiting body. They need to be super-fresh, like at the farmers' market. Not an easy method if you've never done this before.
I'm just getting started with edibles so I do not have all the answers...
Good luck

thanks a lot shaman. I've been looking a lot in the gourmet and medicinal forum and not finding much about how to grow what specific types on what specific medium. any help anyone could give me would be great. i want to find some edibles that grow similar to cubes so that i can get some practice in, as well as learn about the whole process while still making delicious edible mushrooms.

There's plenty of info on how to grow oysters. I would guess that they will grow fine on BRF. I'm not sure if you can fruit directly from it though.
Culturing from store bought oysters is not too hard. You don't really even need the freshest specimen. Lookup creamcorns's LC cloning tek. That should work well. I cleaned an oyster stem, then removed some tissue and pulled a piece from the inside of the stem and dropped it into a test tube of malt extract. It seems to be going great. I have a petri dish with some pieces also going at the moment. All the pieces developed bacterial contamination for some reason, but I poured some peroxide onto it and left it for about 10 minutes, then poured it off. It seems to have fixed the problem.

Read one of the many guides on oyster cultivation. You need a temperature drop and good FAE for oysters. Otherwise it's mostly the same.
