Man who ate wrong kind of mushrooms gravely ill
OLIVER MOORE
A deadly species of wild mushroom has migrated to Toronto, catching public health officials by surprise and putting a local man in hospital.
The 44-year-old victim was gravely ill last night and his chances of recovery uncertain after he ate a toxic type of mushroom known as Amanita bisporigera. Not all of the Amanita genus of mushrooms are poisonous, but the bisporigera species is particularly dangerous because it does internal damage before symptoms are evident.
"You don't usually get symptoms right away," said Margaret Thompson, medical director of the Ontario Regional Poison Information Centre.
"You fry them up, they taste great and the symptoms don't come for 12 hours. You may not connect it to the mushrooms, think it's just gastro [gastroenteritis] and think it'll get better. But it gets worse, and all the while it's eating away at your liver."
The mushrooms grow in mixed coniferous and deciduous forests and can also appear in open areas, though not too far from the trees that nurture them. The stricken man picked the fungus in the city, a shock to health officials who didn't realize it was here.
"The mycologist was very surprised to find them," Dr. Thompson said in an interview. "The particular mushroom that this gentleman foraged for is rarely seen in Ontario. The fact that it's here is worrisome, and the fact that hundreds of them are growing is worrisome."
Health officials will not specify where the mushrooms have appeared, in part because they don't want suicidal people hunting them out, Dr. Thompson said. Also, having appeared without notice they could easily spread to other parts of the city, leaving the information out of date and possibly creating dangerous complacency about other areas.
Instead, the city issued a general advisory yesterday that warned about the danger of eating wild mushrooms. The same warning was last issued in 2003 when a 62-year-old woman died of liver and kidney failure after eating wild mushrooms picked in Toronto.
"Edible mushrooms may appear similar to poisonous species," Howard Shapiro, associate medical officer of health, said in the statement. "Unless you are a mushroom expert, our advice to the public is to not pick or eat wild mushrooms. Mistakes can be fatal."
Dr. Thompson went further, urging parents to keep their children away from wild mushrooms and issuing a blunt warning to would-be pickers.
"You shouldn't be foraging for wild mushrooms," she said. "The mushrooms in the grocery store, they're the safe ones to eat."
Henk van der Gaag, a member of the Mycological Society of Toronto, said that mushroom picking can be done safely as long as beginners keep close to knowledgeable veterans.

The fact that there is ignorant fools that would eat these, is worrysome.

Here's what he ate...
Amanita bisporigera

Supposedly it's mistaken for... Amanita vaginata (Grisette), Leucoagaricus naucina (Smoothcap Parasol), white Agaricus spp. (field mushrooms), and Tricholoma resplendens (Shiny Cavalier).

No wonder we know very little of mushrooms.
Dont get near them, dont touch them, close our eyes and hope they disappear.

Didn't you read the story? Those mushrooms kill children!!! And they may be spreading!
I just hope we can manage to get a napalm airstrike delivered in time to save all those innocent victims from those horrible and evil killer mushrooms.

Yeah, I never go near all white mushrooms. The White angel of death wich is in the amanita family, is a good case in point.
A. Panther is brown - purple with white spots. A. Muscaria is red-orange with white spots. These can be dried in sunlight and then consumed for an interesting expierience. make sure to completly dry them in sunlight, drying them in a food dehydrater or with heat will not completly convert the toxic poison IBOTONIC ACID to Muscimol, Sunlight will convert the toxic IBOTONIC ACID to Muscimol.
