Can anyone help me understand this dream?

Last night, I had a very strange and disturbing dream. The specific details of it are a little foggy, but I do remember the majority of what happened.
First, the dream began with me and my father hiking through what I assume to be the mountains of New Mexico. This is not something surprising, as he and I take many hikes in the mountains and the desert regions around Albuquerque. For almost a decade now, it has been common for us to go hiking together, sometimes with my brother coming along. As the dream progressed, I began to become more and more upset by my father's behavior. It seemed that the further we walked, the more menacing he became. Slowly, the dream changed itself into more of a nightmare, with my father openly antagonizing me.
I remember this part of the dream vividly: I was running through the desert, off the path, with my father and his pit bull chasing me. I was eventually overrun by the dog, and I can remember it biting me on my leg as I ran. The dog tripped me and I fell to the ground. As I was on the ground, my father pulled the dog off and closed both his hands around my throat. He began to choke me, and I can recall the sensation of asphyxiation as my father choked me with extreme malice. I woke up extremely frightened and upset, because the behavior of both my father and the dog (my father hasn't been openly aggressive with me for years and years) is very much not what I would expect.
If anyone could help me sort through this, I would appreciate it immensely. Needless to say, I've been extremely effected by such a frightening dream. I'm living with my father now, and even though I realize that the dream was not real, I cannot help but feel somewhat apprehensive around him.

Well since I son't know any other details of your real life, the answer can be ambiguous since dreams cam reflect what we fear with or without any real arguments, a prediction, a sign, or something that happened on one of your hikes and found your father's behaviour threatening and that could lead you to amplifying it in your dream, seiing a movie that could relate, etc. So the reasons and meanings of your dreams can be more then many. What you need to do if you can think about it and come up with the conclusion. If you think deep and realize that nothing from real life has influenced you into having this dream, maybe it's a sign or something, at it can also not warn you about your father and be something else. Dreams come very twisted and complicated and it's our job to know ourselves and understand life well enough to find our dream's meaning. Maybe it's a warm about the danger you'll meet in your next hike and not produced by your father. Think about it, if you come up with answers or something there could relate to your dream analyze it or post it.
Oh yes, and there are cases where your dream could mean nothing else besides you just being stressed of you going through a time of confusion or general fear as it happens to all of us from time to time.

http://dreamemporium.com/ http://www.dreams-and-astrology.com/dream-interpretation.html These are good sites to try and interpret. For me they always seem to be things i have realized sub-consiously and needed to adress. But these sites give some good guidence:)

Thanks for the tips guys, I think that I will check out those websites. In terms of it being something created by stress, I don't think that stress is really a factor right now. I've been living down here in New Mexico for the last two months or so, and I've been more relaxed than I was for the majority of the past year. Although, I think the dream may be referring to (I'm not sure how) the fact that I am somewhat apprehensive of going off to college this August. However, I do plan to take a day-long hike tomorrow. I think that perhaps I will keep an eye out for anything that seems out of the ordinary while I'm hiking.

Perhaps the reason behind this dream is that you feel like your dad gave the dog better treatment than you (perhaps as a child?), and that you felt some animosity and vulnerability towards your father, i.e. feeling intimidated of him. The dog attacking you is symbolic for the "ideal" son attacking the real one - and the father's attack simply is manifesting the fear of your father's wrath.
just a thought. .

I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one, as I had drawn a similar conclusion. Also, anyone who hasn't should check out those dream interpretation sites posted earlier in the thread. I managed to successfully apply some of the symbolism explained there to a trip I had last December that I've been having trouble integrating.

Was your father's pit bull ever aggressive towards you?

As mushroomTrip said, without knowing the greater details of one's life it is not possible to analyze a dream. I have had over 8 years of Jungian analysis and considerable training in that school. Web sites and books are not going to supply accurate info nor will you be prepared for self-analysis which is the goal of going through analysis.
One thing about dream symbols that I will tell you is that people who appear in our dreams are symbolic representations of specific qualities or principles. Your dream Dad is not your Dad. The image and attending emotions represent a quality such as psychic authority. 'Father' can refer to the Self, as can a king/president/dictator even God. That malicious and destructive power has emerged from a Father-figure indicates Shadow elements - either real or projected by you. I cannot help but remain abstract - I don't know you.
There comes a time in life when a parent is seen as another human being outside of the role of parent. This heralds the beginning of fully adult processes that begin in adolescence. Often the godlike perfection that we projected onto the folks is rapidly withdrawn. Usually happens when we have basically decent parents.
Unresolved Oedipal conflicts sometimes causes us to fear our father (as a rival for our mother's affection). Embarrassing but true. Again, this is a psychic component not about individual personalities. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
