Casing Layer Too Thick!!!
    #5886339 - 07/22/06 01:03 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Hi - How's it going? I cased a couple of tray of WBS, HPOO, and Straw - 4 inches deep - with Peat/Vermiculite. I put the casing layer on way to thick and wet I think. No mycellium was poking through at all after a week or so. When I took the casing layer off the mycellium was like wax and not fuzzy at all - I thought that may be overlay? Anyways I scrapped off most of the casing layer and left 1/8" to 1/4" and even 0" in some spots. It recovered nicely after 2 days - nice and fluffy on top now - and it looks like it's ready to go in the Martha. Does it sound like I did the right thing?

Thanks
Shaq

ehhh, not if it was 0 in some spots... Always shoot for around 1/4-1/2 inch casing layer.

You should have an even casing layer. If that were my casing I would have taken all of the casing material off and recased with new material.

Casing depth depends on your substrate depth. It sounds like your substrate was 4 inches in depth?? If that was the case you could put up 2 inches on top and bottom with no problem. Just make sure not to pack it on too much and not be overly saturated.
