Old Man of the Woods

First off, I want to say hello to everyone out there, and personally thank the administrator for keeping such a well organized, and informative website. I am a freelance wildlife illustrator, and bonafide nature-snooper, and while I've always had a fascination with mushrooms, I've only just recently begun drawing and studying them.
In any case, I wanted to share some photos I took from a mushroom hunt I endured on the 19th during a typical HUMID July day.
The particular species of spotlight on this particular jaunt was one of my personal favorites (not edibly mind you), which you will identify as Old Man of the Woods.
Has anyone here tasted this mushroom?

I actually have a picture of one that's a bit older, but I've reached my maximum upload capacity for now.
I've got tons of photos from this trip in the July folder of my gallery.

Welcome to the Shroomery!!
I like this species, as they are very distinctive and eye catching. Glad you have joined, and have begun studying the field of mycology. We need more folk like you.

I've eaten them before. They were ok but I'll stick with Bay Boletes & Ceps.

Welcome to the shroomery! I've heard mixed reviews on the tastiness of this mushroom. The ones that I find are always a bit spongy and moist, and just never seem too appetizing to me.

Another fine specimen from a few feet away. Looks older, rougher edged.

I actually am quite fond of this mushroom for food and seek it out actively when i can.
It tens to remain firm for longer than most boletes, and is relatively bug-free. It makes a crazy black sauce, and it's just delicious.
I wouldn't let em go to waste. They dry well, too....

I thought about trying it a few times. Never actually did though. I think that as long as they are in fairly good condition and not too old that they would be alright. Probably going to try them next time I see 'em.

I have never eaten them, but my dad tried them and said they were OK. An Old Man black sauce would certainly be a novelty. I'll have to try it next time I find them.

This is a mushroom I always looked for but never found. As well as black trumpets. Just imagine a Trumpet and Man sauce, over noodles with a meat of your choice( Blackened grilled tuna?) To drink: a cool glass of wine spiked with aloe extract and hyysopp.

It's associated with Oaks, and fruits in summer after rains. It's an eastern/midwestern species.
As for trumpets, try beech. or in the pnw madrone, tanoak, chinquapin....

Hey guys, just went out mushrooming this afternoon and found quite an array of species! All thrilling, but being new and all, I only know the names of a few that I found. You'll find some pretty cool pictures in my gallery, and some that are quite possibly mis-identified! Tis why I'm not eating my finds!
I did however find like 4 or 5 more Old Man of the Woods poking about, so if you're in central Pennsylvania, keep your eyes peeled.
I noticed the underside of today's specimens where different from the specimen I plucked from the ground on the 19th.
Today: Notice how the pored region is light in color.

From the 19th: Notice an almost metallic appearance with the deep reds, greens, nad blacks. Possibly because it was past it's prime, and beginning to wane?

Nice pics. Could be an age thing. Old Man can bruise blackish. Also, there is another species, Strobilomyces confusus, that looks very similar to the old man but has some coloration differences. It is known as the 'Confusing Bolete' but is also listed as edible.

Unfortunately, I think the only way to tell the difference between floccopus and confusus is to look at the spore design under a microscope!
Btw...most of the new pics from yesterdays hunt weren't shared, my bad. Now they're available to look at. Thanks for the compliment.

Anyone have any Old Man recipes?
The amount of old man of the woods I'm coming across is astounding. I've never noticed this mushroom before, and suddenly it's everywhere! I guess it's one of those things that never registered in my brain until actually finding it for the first time.
Anyway...I know it's not the absolute tastiest of the edibles, but I think it's safe to say I have this one down ID-wise, enough to eat. Admittingly, he doesn't look very appetizing, but I'm curious!
Oh look...it's me and my old man!

Haha...good thing I didn't inherit his rough skin.

Hey man nice find. I found a couple last year at this time on Gold Mine Mountain, in central PA. Search out some blue foots, I found some round here too, but I'm waiting for more to sprout.

Both species are presumed edible. The way I understand it, is that the inside flesh of floccopus stains a reddish color when cut open, and confusus does not stain red.
I could be wrong about that, so any more info would be appreciated.
