How does one train oneself to be calm in stressful situations?
    #5885979 - 07/21/06 10:21 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Throughout my journey for self improvement, I realized this one was a tough one. Any old people out there have any advice?

You act and react based on your understanding. If you understand how to be calm in a stressful situation, then you will be more apt to do so. There are many ways to teach yourself how to be relaxed and focused enough to do that. It involves self awareness - realize what you are and how you are. Build the strength to accomplish that goal.

You would be suprised how much you can do simply by making a choice and doing it with concentration and dedication.

I always found that making hard stuff fun is the best way to go about it. I like to swim and say to myself 'ok - go - no giving up'. So I will go out there and watch the sunset or the clouds moving. Feel the water and understand how my body is moving. Basically, be aware and try to realize how beautiful everything is. That will give me inspiration. Pride, in a certain respect is good. It will be like igniting a fuse that says 'you came this far, now go further'. However, don't get caught up in it. It is a reason to keep going and keep doing what you're doing with all your focus - not to get caught up in a false sense of security. You will fail if you do not follow through.

Basically, to be a good man, you have to always aim for that. You have to always say - never give up. You have to always be careful and understand what's going on so that you have an idea of what's right and what should be done. Things have a way of working themselves up to the surface when you do not truly know the right way - you will realize that when you are put to the test. If you fail, then you fail. You know what you need to do next time. If you acheive, you know you did well. You still know what you need to do the next time. You will know when you are on the right track. Stay on it - every day - every moment. You never know when will be your moment of truth. Meeting that moment with the strength to do the right thing would be great.

Purposely put yourself in situations that you find stressful more often, and gradually you'll probably get used to remaining calm in those situations.

Being calm I think is a matter of mental control, behavior control and awarness. Knowing that anger and agresssiveness can lead situations far far from resolution, possible dig the ditch deeper and hurt others in very negative and somtimes devistating ways.

You need to keep focused on that principal for awhile, in all situations. Reaching resolution is important in crisis and troubled times. Do it for you though, not because your forced too. This way it will be stronger withen you, because your acting on values, not the enforced social constraints.

I always found part of being calm is being relaxed in your body, and comfortable in your body and person. When you can let go of those little nagging social fears, you are calm, you are collected. Insecurity leads to anxiety, so learn to catch yourself when you feel these emotions taking control. Easier said then done, but Im sure some moments call for calmness, others call for excitment. Also, you want to be calm, start spending 24 hours awake, you will be too tired to get excited. Chew your food like a camel, one, slow bite at a time...this will calm you, and make people laugh.
