Ive been listening alot to the new album and of course it kicks ass. I was reading some of the lyrics and listening alot and it seems like theres alot of references to jesus(christ) or christ consciousness. I never really remember tool being like that especially with undertow and opiate but then they became more spritual/psychedelic with salvia and now their latest album. For me psychedelics and christ come hand in hand if you ever have really mind blowing experience you have to be a believer(IMO). So the question is, are they being sarcastic or are they really spiritual or are they just playing what they think their fans want to hear(If thats the case good fucking job). Can anyone give me any insight into this or share your thoughts?

TOOL have never really acknowledged the fact that they use drugs. some people find obvious drug references in their songs, other find spiritual references, it really depends on who you are and what you believe. just take what you want from it.

But I completely agree with you about how most awesome musicians (Beatles, Dead, Floyd ect) always leave their songs open for interpretation thats what makes it so good because it makes it personal. But I guess what Im really asking here is what are your guys interpretation of it then? Of course we couldn't know for sure what they mean or what its all about unless we asked the band themselves and ever then probably still wouldn't get an honest answer.

The Jesus Christ material in the latest Tool is more for his mother than anything else.
She was a Chrisitian and she just lost her battle with cancer. Part of this album is actually a tribute to her battle and her being able to get into heaven apon her death.
Do a serach for tool and in the Pub and you will find another thread here with 3 of the songs from the album sqished together that one of the pubbers put together.
Viginti Tres (23 the number of unity) / Wings for Marie (Maynards Mother) and 10,000 days (the number of days she fought cancer) all are 11:13 long. Play them at the same time from 3 different sources for one cool harmonizing effect.

I heard about it on another board but the funny thing is someone here put together the mp3. I actually have it although it is better to do it from 3 different sources.
Some say the 3 different sources are a reference to the Tinity but the number 3 has been sacred for along time.

She fought cancer for 5 or 10 years that I know of that so you are probably correct about the 10,000. 10,000 days may also be a reference to the 10,000 day war (vietnam) but all of this stuff is debatable.
He does mention his mother several times in the songs though and if you look on the foldout of the CD-Cover those are the only 3 songs listed.
1 is unity in alot of faiths but its 23 in perfect math is unity. Numbers and stuff
That is one of the reasons it is so interesting is because there is some actual depth to the music tool makes. Its like a maze that can be explored instead of just something you listen to with pretty notes (not that that is bad either.
