CARLITO's Bag Recipe: im having one of those moments...
#5884981 - 07/21/06 04:39 PM (17 years, 6 months ago) |

|
Im trying out Wronguy's bag recipe and its been three days and there is hardly anything colonizing. so i started to wonder why...
well, apperently its not in wronguys version above, but in some other version of the same recipe i read, the ingredient list said:
16 1/2 cups of uncooked WBS. (for measurments sake?)
i think i took this the wrong way. didnt cook my WBS, i just mixed it up dry. JESUS, come to think, i didnt even rinse it off... i thought it might soak up a little water while PCing or something, i dont know.
Is this the problem? im i retarded?
it would only be appropiate for this grow, followed by this
i think im losing my fucking mind...

Well, it wouldn't be any dumber than shit I've done myself. Don't beat yourself up about it. Hell, I recently threw out a full casing because I thought it was "bad" when it now appears likely I was just listening to some really depressing tunes (Harrowdown Hill, specifically).
That's pretty dumb. =)
But if you didn't soak the WBS, it doesn't have anywhere near the moisture that the spores need to grow and thrive on. It's basically a loss.
I'd start over.

i just inspected my bags and it does seem like the WBS soaked up a significant amount of water during the PC run. i could squish the millet/milo between my fingers, it felt like my preppared WBS, maybe a little drier. but isnt drier better for spawning? i thought that was the idea of not cooking it...

Well, ...if you don't mind possibly wasting the spores, go for it.
If they smoosh between your fingers, that's pretty much the consistency I look for. I'm kinda stunned that's what you're seeing from a PC only, though...

you cook the bags for 3 hours, so all the moisture in the poo/verm steams up the bag. its like steaming rice.
im not sure that dry WBS is my problem, im waiting for a vet to swing down and clarify the tek for me.

Ummmmm....errrrrr, huhhhhhhhhhhh
Those will not PC/autoclave.
You can pasteurize h/poo in them.
Don't Pc them.
They will melt.
Check your pm's.

well if it does not look overly wet then give it a go. what have you got to lose unless you have no more LC or spores. which if thats the case I am sure shroomery members will just send you a print. We need pics to even get this thing off the ground

i dont know what youre talking about. i knocked up 6 bags with 1000cc of LC, and i have gallons more. im not trying save the bags, i just want to know if im reading the recipe correctly...
as for the bags not being autoclavible, AGAR was the one that told me to get them
though, he recommended the 3mil, i went for the 2 mil because im a jewish bastard. but i dont think it will make a difference, right....

Yeah... those bags will most likely melt in your PC... 2 mil is fine... You can get them at medical supply websites.
Here's 200 for 40 bucks: http://www.bettercontainers.com/autoclave.htm
Sorry, but you _DID_ waste your money, most likely. You can try a trial run... Put one of your bags in a pint jar and PC for however long you were going to pc your bags.
But autoclave bags are at least .002 inch polypropeylene.
Anyways, sorry to bum you out! Hopefully your bag in pint jar test works (wont get your pc messy).

.002 inches is 1/2millimeter, so thats even thinner than what ive got. these are poly bags as well. ill just have to PC one and settle this. i bet if i sent it back missing a bag, no one would know, naughty.

:P who would have thought that mil meant thousandth of an inch!? haha... (mil = thousandth) ie... MILlimeter (thousandth of a meter), MILligram (thousandth of a gram), etc, etc.
Just normal for the good ole american measurment system to rip off something and just shorten it to mil, when it should be something like... millinch... Oh wait, THAT's why they don't call it a millinch!!! Because it sounds almost as stupid as it looks. haha, millinch, oh man, i crack myself up.

as for your original question about the wbs...
you did it correct.
the number one problem you will face is your substrate being too wet.
make sure it is on the drier side and you will be fine.

Let me first clarify that the recipe is my own. Agar (Kelp meal) and Blue Helix (WBS) gave me some tips on ingredients, but the recipe is mine. Okay, everything you did, assuming you followed the recipe, is 100% correct. The WBS is mixed in dry and is not simmered or soaked.
The moisture content is perfect if you use the recipe and try to keep the measurements on the money. I sent you a PM on this Omni. I would like to see a pic of your LC before making any judgments. By the way, 3 days is not always going to show an extensive amount of growth. I tend to find 4-5 days to be the mark for noticeable growth.

day 5 1/2:

i guess im used to LC Knocked subtrate colonizing much more rapidly. there was literally next to nothing last night... sneaky mycelium. probably a little behind, but it looks like they will pull through.
heres a pic of the LCs used:

And sorry about not giving you cred for the recipe! im apparently getting dumber by the day...

because i like the polyfil neck filter on my bags. why? i dont know, i just like them. i dont want to worry about blocking the filter patch with substrate.

had i known the bag thing would get so much response, i would have started a new thread. unrelated they are.
the colonizing bags are that last of my mycosupply spawn bags, so then i ordered the uline bags, which apparently suck. just by feeling/pulling them, i can tell that they are weak and probably wont stand up to the PC. i still must try, tonight, its too fucking hot right now.

some people use oven bags, and you can even use the large oven bags if you want. they can only handle so much abuse though, or they might rip a little seam that dooms your whole effort.
i like the bag in a jar idea, with an inch or 2 of water in the jar, for weight and added moisture for protection.

Yeah, I'm a genius (literally).
You can thank me later :P
Yeah, I have a huge box of oven bags that I got from a restraunt supply store. I did a jar test with one of them and it survived, so I had always wondered why no one ever used them, but you answered my question! I also like your 'filter patch'. I was thinking about doing something similar, a 1 inch piece of pvc, pull the open end of the bag through, pull it down, then duct tape a tyvek patch over the open tube...

Omnicracker-
I got duped as well but the 3 mil should be PC'able. You just jewed yourself into 1000 casing bags. Thats what I use them for. Pack the PC till there is no room in two bags and polyfil rubberband the top. It works just fine but you have to cut the top off as the bag will melt at the top. I have also used the 2 mil successfully without the top melting. They suck do not get me wrong but I Pasteurize a ton of manure so they work great for me in that respect. Ill probably order some 3 mil for the casings as well. Just be careful if your PC gets running around 17psi then the bags may want to start sticking to one another. Just take them out slowly.
